The Germans are set to compete with the KTM RC390 at the supersport game

It’s a Friday blockbuster this weekend with BMW Motorrad India. In a rather surprising move, it has shared a teaser of a new motorcycle that will be unveiled on the 15th of July 2022. The teaser reveals nothing but the taillight of a motorcycle, one that looks similar to the TVS Apache 310 RR. Which begs the question, is BMW finally set to enter the entry-level super sport segment with a G 310 RR?

In 2013 TVS and BMW Motorrad signed a long-term partnership agreement. One that would allow both brands to share platform and also compete in the popular 300cc segment, both in India and internationally. The venture gave BMW the G 310 R, a streetfighter and G 310 GS, an adventure tourer. Meanwhile TVS rolled out the Apache RR 310, a super sport. Hence it may appear, the German bike maker is set to enter the ring with a super sport that’s built on TVS’ Apache RR 310.

The evidence is compelling with the teaser showing the same tail light, pillion grab handle, windscreen and mirrors. That said, this will likely wear the BMW supersport garb with the iconic red, blue and violet tricolours. In addition we do expect the BMW G 310 RR to get the Bavrian touch with a revised headlight, seats and maybe even the instrument console.

This move could be a strategic play for BMW Motorrad overseas given how feature rich the TVS Apache RR 310 has evolved into over the past five years. It’s ideal to compete with the likes of the KTM RC 390 which now gets preload-adjustable suspension, cornering ABS, traction control and a TFT display. The Apache’s platform brings features like fully adjustable suspension to the foreground too. We suspect the Germans would most likely offer this hardware as standard. That said, given how little we have seen from the Japanese bikemakers in the segment, this move should allow BMW to crawl up the ladder fast.

We expect the BMW supersport to be priced at Rs 2.85 lakh, which, while Rs 20,000 more expensive than the TVS Apache RR 310, considerably cheaper than the 2022 KTM RC 390 at Rs 3.13 lakh(all prices mentioned are ex-showroom). The BMW G 310 R currently retails at Rs 2.65 lakh and G 310 GS costs Rs 3.05 lakh.

The upcoming supersport may be just a rebadged TVS Apache RR 310 but having another contender in the right is always good news for the enthusiasts. We sincerely hope BMW will tweak the platform for a uniquely German experience.
