  • The Lectro EHX20 will use Yamaha’s drivetrain and battery pack.
  • Hero Cycles will be in charge of the design and manufacturing process.
  • It’s most likely to be an electrically assisted mountain bike.

Hero Cycles is all set to launch its Yamaha-powered electric cycle in India tomorrow. Alongside the launch, the brand will also be announcing its official joint venture with Yamaha and Mitsui. The first e-bike to be launched by the brand will be called Lectro EHX20, which is likely to be a mountain bike with electric assist.

Hero Cycles already sells a couple of hybrid electric cycles in India under the Lectro brand name. The commonsensical move would be to introduce an electrically assisted mountain bike which would help the brand capture a larger chunk of the market.

As per the agreement, the folks from Yamaha will be in-charge of provided the e-bike’s drivetrain and battery pack whereas the complete design and manufacturing will be handled by Hero Cycles itself. Mitsui, the third piece of the puzzle and one of the largest trading and investment companies in Japan, will be in charge of the project's feasibility. The cycle will be sold via Hero’s dealership network in a phased manner based on demand. The first city to receive this cycle will be Delhi according to the company.

The Japanese two-wheeler manufacturer has been strengthening its position in India with its two-wheeler division and believes it could do the same with electrically-assisted cycles, which is likely to grow at an exponential rate in the near future.
