We take a closer look at this electric Honda Grom rip-off

If there was an award for the most paradoxical name in the world of motorcycling, surely the Joy Monster would win it hands down. We’ll forgive you if you’ve never heard of it, but let’s bring you up to speed. Joy e-Bike is an Indian electric two-wheeler manufacturer based in Gujarat. Well, we use the term ‘Indian’ loosely because though the company has its offices in India, most of the products seem to come straight from China.

One such product is the hilariously named ‘Monster’: an electric Honda Grom rip-off with a heady top-speed of, wait for it….. 25kmph. Like most electrics out there, it’s powered by hub motor, but this one manages just 250 Watts of output (the equivalent of 0.34PS, or in other words, the exact amount of power lost by the Activa 125 as part of its BS6 update). It’s fed by a 30Ah lithium-ion battery pack housed in the belly of the motorcycle, which, to make it look as authentic as possible, features an external housing that resembles petrol engine casings.

A range of 75km would be respectable for a high-speed EV but on the Monster, it’s nothing noteworthy. And at that top speed, your backside will probably run out of steam long before the bike does. As and when the battery pack does run dry, it’ll take about 4.5 hours for a full charge, which is rather long considering its humble capacity. Needless to say, there is no fast charging on offer.

As for the rest of the bike, it rolls on 14-inch wheels and is suspended on an upside-down fork (with a tacky red finish) and monoshock (which should have received a contrasting red spring instead). Braking is taken care of by discs at both ends, which seems like overkill in this context. If you must ask, the Monster will set you back by a rather unbelievable Rs 98,999 (on-road).
