Two-wheeler owners need not worry about paying tolls on Indian highways

No tolls for bikes and scooters

    Quick Highlights

    • Nitin Gadkari and NHAI (National Highways Authority of India) have debunked the fake news
    • Recently, news about toll payment for two-wheeler riders was circulating on the internet
    • Government says no plans for future as well

Recently, rumours started floating around on the internet about the government's plans to introduce tolls for two-wheelers from July 15, 2025. It seems several media outlets and social media handles jumped the gun, and have spread news without factchecking.

Nitin Gadkari, Minister of Road Transport & Highways, Government of India, as well as National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) have busted the rumour on their respective official X (formerly known as Twitter) handles.

In the tweet, the honourable Road Minister has clearly stated that no proposal has been made about introducing toll-tax for two-wheelers. He further states that the toll exemption for two-wheelers will continue to remain in effect. He not only debunks the rumours, but also condemns the spreading of false news by the media outlets.

NHAI’s tweet also states that there are no such plans in consideration. Two-wheelers are not only a method of travelling, but also a source of income for a lot of Indians. So much so, that it won’t be wrong to say that they are the backbone of the Indian economy; not only in rural parts of the country, but also a considerable chunk of Tier 1 cities. Lack of tolls is one of the many reasons that makes two-wheelers the most chosen form of transport. We can only imagine the kind of uproar from the aam aadmi if the tolls are introduced for two-wheelers.

All said, we appreciate the timely intervention by the government by shutting down the rumours, before it caused an unnecessary confusion and panic amongst the masses.
