    Engine Oil Viscosity Grades Explained

Engine oil grades and viscosity directly impact performance, mileage, and long-term reliability. For most Indian riders, terms like 5W-30 or 20W-40 are commonly seen on engine oil bottles and in the bike’s owner’s manual, but not always understood. These numbers represent the oil’s viscosity or its thickness, which determines how well it flows inside the engine under different temperatures.

    Understanding The Grading System

Let us take 10W-30 for example, wherein the “W” stands for winter. The first number is the viscosity at cold starts while the second number is the viscosity when the engine is at operating temperature. The viscosity is simply the thickness or thin-ness of the oil. A thinner oil will flow more freely, while a thicker oil will flow slowly, sticking on to the surfaces it's flowing on.

    Why Viscosity Matters

This is very important because engines often run at higher RPM and deal with stop-and-go traffic. Using oil that is too thick can affect pickup and mileage, while oil that is too thin may not protect hot engine parts properly. In Indian riding conditions, with long idling and high temperatures, the right oil helps maintain consistent performance.

    Why Manufacturer Recommendation Matters

Following the recommended oil grade is equally important. Manufacturers specify oil grades based on engine design and real-world conditions like climate. Using the correct oil helps maintain mileage, ensures smoother running, and prevents long-term damage.
