Oben Rorr Electric Bike Launched, Rivals Tork Kratos

  • Oben Rorr is priced at Rs 99,999 (ex-showroom, Maharashtra, including FAME II subsidy).
  • Has a 100kmph top speed and 200km claimed range under ideal driving conditions.
  • Takes two hours to charge fully.

Bengaluru-based EV startup Oben Electric has launched its first electric motorcycle, the Oben Rorr. This e-bike is priced at Rs 99,999 (ex-showroom Maharashtra, including FAME II and state subsidy), and the company says its pre-bookings will commence on March 18 – for a deposit of Rs 999 –  on the company website. Test rides will commence from May, and deliveries from July.

In its first phase, Oben will offer the electric bike in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Pune, Mumbai, Delhi, Surat, Ahmedabad, and Jaipur, by the middle of this year. Unlike Ola Electric, this EV maker will sell the electric motorcycle via its dealerships.

Oben Electric claims the Rorr has been indigenously designed, developed and manufactured in the country. Unlike the Revolt RV 400, the Oben Rorr is closer to a 150cc petrol-powered equivalent. It is powered by a 10kW frame-mounted permanent magnet motor offering an acceleration from 0-40kmph in 3 seconds. The claimed top speed is 100kmph, and the electric bike packs Eco, City and Havoc riding modes. Oben Electric claims a true range of 100km in Havoc, 120km in City, and 150km in Eco mode.

The motor is linked to a 4.4kWh lithium-ion battery pack, with an onboard charger compatible with a 15A charging socket. The company claims the battery pack is good for 200km under Ideal Driving Conditions (IDC), and it can be charged in two hours. Oben Electric will set up over 1,000 charging stations in the country.

The Rorr is built on a proprietary ARX frame linked to a telescopic front fork and a rear monoshock. Braking is via discs at both ends, with CBS as standard. What’s more impressive is that the Rorr gets a generous 200mm ground clearance and a 230mm water-wading capability.

Other notable features include an all-LED lighting system, GPS tracking on the battery pack, a fully digital instrument cluster with smartphone connectivity, connected vehicle features such as predictive maintenance, ride details, battery status, geo-fencing, geo-tagging, charging station locator, on-demand service, and roadside assistance.

The Oben Rorr will be built at the company’s manufacturing facility in Electronic City, Bengaluru. Its production capacity will start at 6,000 units a month and will eventually reach 3,00,000 units per year.

Oben Electric offers a 3-year/ 60,000-km warranty on the battery, three years of roadside assistance, and a 3-year warranty for the motor and controller. These schemes should ensure easy maintenance.

All in all, the Oben Rorr seems like an ideal alternative to the Tork Kratos, that is, if the bike’s performance matches  the on-paper specifications. We hope the company accelerates the setting up of charging infrastructure as that would go a long way in mitigating range anxiety. Of course, dealership expansion should be on point as well if the company wants to match the demand.
