Hero has launched the new Vida Dirt.E K3 in India at an introductory price of Rs 69,990 (ex-showroom), for the first 300 customers. It is an electric dirt bike designed especially for children of age 4 to 10 years, who are eager to learn competitive off-road riding. The Dirt.E K3 offers a clean, simple and confidence-boosting platform for young riders. Sure, it may seem a bit costly, but it is still a lot cheaper than the next most affordable dirt bike for kids, the Kawasaki KX65 (two-stroke), priced at Rs 2,88,000 (ex-showroom).
Design
At a glance, the Vida Dirt.E K3 looks just like a miniature dirt bike, complete with a minimal bodywork, high-mounted front fender and sleek looking tail-section which also gets a grab handle for parents to hold on. Along with this, the bike also gets a premium looking golden coloured fork, and blacked-out spoked wheels to complete the overall dirt bike look.
Performance
The Vida Dirt.E K3 is powered by an 360Wh removable battery pack paired with an electric motor that produces 500W of peak power and 350W of continuous power. The idea here isn’t outright performance, but smooth, predictable power delivery that helps children learn throttle control, and balance without feeling overwhelmed. The battery takes approximately 2 hours to get from 20 to 80%, and provides a working range of 2 to 3 hours.
The e-bike also gets three ride modes: Cruise, Boost and Zoom, with adjustable top speed in each mode. Along with this, it also gets three acceleration modes: Low, Mid and High with a top speed limit of 8kmph, 17kmph and 25kmph respectively. Vida has also given it a magnetic, lanyard based kill switch which immediately cuts down the power if the rider is seperated from the bike. Being an EV, it also offers silent operation, extremely low running costs, and minimal maintenance - a major advantage over the small 2-stroke dirt bikes usually seen in this segment.
Underpinnings
The Vida Dirt.E K3 comes with a unique adjustable frame in which the wheelbase, seat and handlebar height can be customized. All of this is a part of a three-stage setup (Small, Medium, High), which basically allow parents to set-up the ergonomics of the Dirt.E K3 (by adjusting the frame using tools) as their children grow. The three-stage setup offers seat height of 454mm, 544mm and 637mm respectively. At 22kg, the Dirt.E should be easier for children to pick up, and maneuver the bike during tight trail sections.
The E-bike comes with what appears to be a golden-coloured fork, but it’s actually a dummy unit, since the Dirt.E K3 doesn’t get a functional suspension setup as standard. Instead, Hero will offer a proper suspension system as an optional accessory with front fork and a rear monoshock. Hero has equipped the Dirt.E K3 with 16-inch front and rear spoke wheels wrapped in knobby tyres, giving it good grip on dirt, grass, and loose surfaces. The bike only gets a 160mm rear disc brake with brake rotor cover. As standard, the Dirt.E does not get a front brake setup. That said, buyers will be able to opt for a front brake, larger wheels, and even road-spec tyres through the accessory list.
Features
As it's a children’s e-bike, the Dirt.E K3 does not get a feature loaded instrument console, found in most electric two-wheelers. Instead, Vida has given it a smartphone application through which parents can limit the e-bike’s top speed and configure its acceleration. Along with this, the application also shows ride analytics.
