TVS Apache RTR 200 4V Race Edition 2.0 Highlights

The newest iteration of TVS's 200cc street bike is called the Apache RTR 200 4V Race Edition 2.0. Updates for 2018 include the introduction of a slipper clutch, a new flyscreen and race inspired graphics. New colour options include black/red, grey/yellow, white/red, red/black and matte black/red. TVS claims the new slipper clutch reduces clutch lever effort by 22 percent, allows quicker gearshifts and prevents wheel hop during aggressive downshifting.
It carries forward the same air and oil-cooled single cylinder motor in the same state of tune as its predecessor. The motor comes in two versions: Carburetted and fuel injected. The carburetted variant makes 20.5PS while the fuel-injected one makes a slightly higher 21PS. Both offer same torque outputs at 18.1Nm and come mated to a 5-speed gearbox.
The split cradle frame uses the engine as a stressed member and has telescopic forks upfront and a monoshock damper at the rear. Braking is via 270mm front and 240mm rear petal discs. ABS is available as an option. The bike comes fitted with 90/90 R-17 and 130/70 R-17 TVS Remora tyres but also offer Pirelli tyres as an optional fitment.
The Apache RTR 200 4V is available in three variants: Carburetted, Fi and Carburetted with ABS. The bike competes with the Bajaj Pulsar NS 200, Yamaha FZ 25 and the upcoming Hero Xtreme 200R.

TVS Apache RTR 200 4V Race Edition 2.0 Expert Review

Overview

Design and Features

The Apache RTR 200 4V Race Edition 2.0 carries forward the design language of the Apache series but now looks sharper, meaner and more focused. The bike gets a lot of unique details like the offset fuel-filler cap, a black stripe that runs across the center of the tank and the double barrel exhaust. Fit and finish are top notch while switchgear feels premium. New updates for 2018 include a flyscreen atop the headlamp and new dual-tone colour schemes.
Features include clip-ons and a fully-digital instrument cluster that displays a host of information like lap times, acceleration times, fastest speed recorded, service indicator and gear indicator.

Braking and Handling

The RTR 's split cradle frame uses the engine as a stressed member for better rigidity and lightness. TVS claims the new frame is 25 percent more stable. It uses KYB suspension components in the form of telescopic front forks and a rear monoshock. While ride quality over uneven surfaces is plush, the rear suspension tends to get caught out by bumps quite easily and takes time to settle down leading to a pogo effect for the pillion rider.

The bike gets a sharp rake so the quick steering takes some getting used to. The front end has a tendency to dive into corners but mid-corner stability is quite good. That allows you to ride the bike in a spirited manner. While the Remora tyres get the job done, the expensive Pirelli tyres are the ones to go for as they offer that extra grip in corners and while braking.

Safety and Features

Safety comes in the form of an optional dual-channel ABS unit that reduces braking distance while improving stability under braking. The unit also gets rear lift protection (RLP) system that keeps the bike from performing unintentional stoppies under hard braking.
