An essential part of the rear suspension system of a motorcycle, the swingarm connects the rear wheel with the frame in a motorcycle. Usually made of aluminium or steel, and even carbon fibre in some of the most expensive sports bikes. The swingarm is affixed to the frame of a motorcycle with the help of a pivot bolt. This suspension system component helps the motorcycle to allow the up-and-down movement of the rear wheel. And the rear suspension, whether twin shocks or a monoshock, also connects the swingarm to the motorcycle's frame and aids in damping shocks when traveling over bumps and undulations.
Most motorcycles come equipped with H-shaped swingarms for the conventional double-sided swingarms. However, in recent decades, some expensive sports bikes and adventure tourers have started featuring L-shaped, or single-sided swingarms for the rear wheel. If the swingarm is shorter in length, the wheelbase of the motorcycle eventually reduces, which allows it to be a quick handler. However, a longer swingarm is better for quicker off-the-line acceleration due to more optimum weight and power distribution and also assists in the stability of the motorcycle whether in a straight line or when leaned over in corners.
