EXCLUSIVE: Peugeot Django 125 Spied Again, India Launch This Year

Peugeot’s upcoming retro scooter comes with a few changes compared to the one sold abroad

• The India-spec Peugeot Django 125 features a long single-piece seat.
• The shape of the instrument console and the headlight are different too.
• Launch likely by the end of this year.

Looks like Peugeot is really serious about entering the Indian market, as the Django retro scooter has been spotted testing yet again. This time around, it’s been camouflaged, making it evident that the brand intends to launch it here, and soon. 

Going by the spy shots, one major difference lies in the seat setup. While the Django sold overseas gets a split seat setup with a hinge on the rider’s seat for the underseat storage compartment, the India-spec model features a long single-piece seat. We reckon this might lead to it having a much larger underseat storage than the international model for extra practicality. 

Moving to the front, the scooter gets a boxy LED headlight instead of the circular halogen unit. Even the circular instrument cluster seems to have been replaced with a rectangular one. 

The India-spec Peugeot Django will likely have a 125cc air-cooled engine as it already complies with the Euro5 emissions norms. In the UK, this motor churns out  11.4PS and 11.2Nm. We’ll be glad if Peugeot tunes the engine to suit Indian riding conditions. The 12-inch alloys and underpinnings (telescopic fork, single rear shock absorber) have been carried over from the international model.

The test mule sported an MH14 number plate, which means it’ll likely be manufactured at Mahindra’s plant in Chakan, near Pune. Peugeot could make use of Mahindra’s existing two-wheeler dealership network in addition to setting up some of its own. If Peugeot wanted to make a mark in India, bringing in a 125cc retro scooter seems like a sound business move, as the segment is witnessing a major demand in recent years. Moreover, the retro styling will appeal to a wider section of the audience. 

That said, it will not be by any means cheap. Expect the Django 125 to command a price tag of around Rs 1.4 lakh (ex-showroom). It will go directly against the Vespa SXL125, priced at Rs 1.20 lakh (ex-showroom Pune). Other more affordable alternatives will include the Yamaha Fascino 125 Fi Hybrid with the segment-first mild-hybrid technology, and the Special Edition variant of the best-seller in the 125cc space, the Suzuki Access 125.
