Petrol prices in India are already sky-high but still in the degrading environmental conditions, therefore, the Indian automobile industry need to upgrade its emission norms to BS-V. However, to upgrade the norms, magnificent investment of Rs. 80,000 crore is required from the oil marketing companies. The companies only have seven years to bring this change and make the world greener and healthier. To gather a huge amount like this, it is pretty obvious that these companies will increase the price of the fuel.

To make it an easier transformation, the expert committee, tasked by the petroleum ministry has suggested to stepwise upgrade the emission norms in the country. In this process, BS-IV will first be upgraded to BS-IV and it will be done by 1st April, 2017. Than the major upgradation to BS-V will be implemented by 1st April, 2021, only when fresh investments are by the Oil Marketing companies (OMC).

As there is a long way to cover to meet BS-V emission norms, the committee has suggest to introduce BS4 emission norms in the northern states by the next fiscal year. Then in April 2016, it is to implemented in the West and South followed by the remains of the country by April 2017. BS4 fuel will be having Sulphar content 40ppm that is 10ppm less than BS-V fuel (50ppm Sulphar).
