India's carbon-fibre helmet journey hits a new milestone.

    Axor MX Carbon

We take great pride in our Indian-made motorcycles, giving international products a good run for their money. But what about Indian-made helmets? Their reputation has not been great. Axor helmets, a subdivision of Vega helmets, aims to change that very perception. The brand has recently launched its new MX Carbon helmet, which Axor claims is the world's lightest MX helmet, weighing just 1,050 grams (+/- 50 grams). Further making it more appealing is the fact that it gets ISI, DOT and ECE 22.06 certification. All of this at a very attractive cost of just Rs 20,000.

We got a firsthand chance to see the helmet come to life at Vega’s Belgaum plant. Multiple strands of carbon fibres woven with Kevlar and fibreglass provide the starting point in creating the MX Carbon. The sheets are placed inside the mould, covered with resin and given shape through the balloon moulding process for the helmet shell. This typically is left to set for a day, post which a water jet cutting machine removes excess material with precision.

On other Axor helmets, stickers are placed on the shell and locked in with a lacquer coat and instantly dried using UV light. On this MX Carbon, just a clear coat and mandatory certification stickers are applied. Finally, the padding, straps and vents are installed on the assembly line, and the helmet is ready but not yet to be sold.

It first goes through a vigorous testing phase which includes a drop test, a field of view test, a pellet gun test and more such tests required to pass a batch. Once cleared, the helmet is ready to be used by motorcyclists.

Axor is so sure about the quality of its product that it hung a 160 kg motorcycle with the straps of the MX Carbon helmet, which it did without any issue.

Currently, Axor is only making the MX Carbon available in three sizes: Small, Medium and Large. Hopefully, we will be getting a review unit pretty soon, post which we should be able to share our findings of the same.
