BMW Motorrad has launched the latest generation of its high-performance naked bike, the BMW S 1000 R, in India. Priced at an eye-watering Rs 19.90 lakh (ex-showroom), the motorcycle will be sold as a CBU (completely built unit, which means a fully-imported bike), and bookings are now open across all BMW Motorrad dealerships in the country.

Design & Features
The bike sticks to the aggressive roadster stance, highlighted by its new bug-eyed LED headlight design and compact rear end. Although the overall silhouette of the street naked remains the same. BMW offers it in three paint options: Blackstorm Metallic, Bluefire/Mugiallo Yellow (Style Sport), and Light White Uni/M Motorsport (M package).
It gets a 6.5-inch TFT console with smartphone connectivity, full LED lighting, riding modes (Rain, Road, Dynamic), multiple levels of cornering traction control, cornering ABS, and a USB charging socket,. Buyers can also add equipment packages: Dynamic, Comfort, and M Sport, that bring features like semi-active suspension, cruise control, heated grips, shift assist, forged wheels, and more.

Engine, Performance & Underpinnings
The BMW S 1000 R is fast! Power comes from a 999cc inline-four engine producing 170PS at 11,000rpm and 114Nm at 9,250rpm. The bike can accelerate from 0-100kmph in a claimed 3.2 seconds and the top speed is electronically limited to 250kmph. BMW says the engine now delivers a smoother torque curve than before, making it more rideable in everyday conditions.
As for the underpinnings, the S 1000 R gets fully adjustable suspension at both ends, twin 320mm discs at the front and a single 220mm disc at the rear. It gets 17-inch wheels at both ends wrapped around with a 120-section front and a 190-section rear tyre. The seat height is on the taller side at 830mm with the option of either increasing to 850mm or decreasing it to 810mm. The motorcycle is quite light for its category and has a kerb weight of just 199kg despite having a fuel tank capacity of 17 litres.

BikeDekho Says
At Rs 19.90 lakh (ex-showroom), the new BMW S 1000 R brings superbike-level performance in a more practical naked roadster package. With 170hp, sharp styling, and plenty of electronic aids, it positions itself as a serious alternative to the Ducati Streetfighter V4, Honda Hornet CB1000 SP, Triumph Speed Triple 1200 RS and the KTM 1390 Super Duke R. In fact, it is the second most-affordable litre-class naked after the Honda Hornet.
