The California based company- Lightning has unveiled its new electric superbike LS-218 and it claims to be the fastest production motorcycle in the world up until now. The company has spent six years to develop this superfast electric machine, which has been tested for a top speed of 347.47kmph at Bonneville Salts during 2011 SpeedWeek.

Currently, Kawasaki Ninja ZX-14R is the fastest production motorcycle with a land speed record of 334.99kmph at the hands of rider Ralph Nikolls. The most amazing fact about the Lightning LS-218 is it's an electric powered bike, which claims to break the land speed record held by a gasoline powered motorcycle, ZX-14R. Acceleration of the bike is unbelievable and it can do a 0-100kmph mark in mere 3 seconds.

The bike will be available in the International market sometime this year and the company has already started taking booking for an advance amount of $38,888 (around Rs. 23 lakh). The bike gets a proper superbike look with full body fairing and sports a powerful liquid-cooled, electric motor, delivering 202.78PS of maximum power along with a peak torque of 227.78Nm.

Lightning LS-218 will be made available in two battery back options- 160km range and a more powerful top variant with a range of 260-290kms depending on cruising speed. The advance charging system makes it capable for completing the 80 percent of charging task in just 30 minutes. A powerful bike also needs a highly efficient braking system, hence the bike gets dual front and single rear Brembo powered disc brakes. This most powerful superbike with lots of highly advanced features weighs only 225kg.
