Expert Review
The Aprilia SR series has always stood apart for its sporty looks and sharp handling. Since the SR 150 first arrived in 2016, Aprilia has positioned the SR as the scooter for riders who want thrills over comfort. The new SR 175 builds on this legacy with a larger 174.7cc engine, new colour options, and a modern 5-inch TFT display. True to Aprilia’s DNA, it doubles down on performance rather than practicality.
This isn’t a scooter meant for everyone. The SR 175 is unapologetically sporty, designed for those who want quick acceleration and agile dynamics, even if it means compromising on storage space and plushness. For riders like me, who enjoy sharp handling and spirited riding, it delivers excitement, though not without flaws.
You will find it difficult to notice anything different about the SR 175 from the SR 160 – because there isn’t. The sharp body panels, angular apron, sleek headlamp, and the raised tail make it one of the sportiest-looking scooters. The seat is a single piece but has a distinct cut separating rider and pillion areas.
Aprilia SR 175: Colours
It is offered in four colour options: Glossy Tech White, Matt Prismatic Dark, SR-GP Replica, and SR Tribute. The first two get glossy red alloys, while the latter two get gloss black. The SR-GP Replica has taken inspiration from the Italian brand’s MotoGP bike livery. It’s very much in your face with the amount of sponsor stickering it has. The SR Tribute gets a camouflage-like paint scheme, with black wheels.
Aprilia SR 175: Build Quality
Build and paint quality are acceptable at best, considering the price at which this scooter sits at. The switches don't feel as good to use compared to most other scooters. Even the inner apron plastics don't feel up to the mark.
The highlight feature is the new 5-inch colour TFT screen borrowed from 457 twins. It gets Bluetooth connectivity, turn-by-turn navigation, phone alerts, music controls - all enabled and operated via the Aprilia smartphone app. But, the phone pairing takes time and is finicky in its implementation. It has an auto day and night mode which works pretty well and has almost no delay. The console also has 2 distinct display modes: digital and analogue, of which the digital layout looks cleaner and easier to comprehend.
Confusingly, there're 2 ‘mode’ buttons on the right side switchgear to toggle through the screen menus and functions. It takes some time getting used to the operations and it's not that intuitive for most.
Aprilia SR 175: Safety Features
The scooter gets single-channel ABS, a front disc brake with steel-braided lines, and a rear drum brake. It misses out on a hazard light switch, traction control and panic braking lights that some of its rivals get.
Storage & Practicality
Underseat storage space is very limited - even most half-face helmets won’t fit, and it still does not get an external fuel filler cap, it doesn't get a multi-function key slot as well! So, in order to access the storage space or to fill fuel, you have to get down from the scooter and access the dedicated slot. So very 2010.
Furthermore, even the floor isn’t generous and the handlebar is closely located to the rider. Hence, taller riders and those with large feet will feel cramped. The floorboard feels cramped, especially for taller riders or those with large feet. All of these have been pain points since the original SR 150 launched back in 2016.
The forward-sloping seat pushes the rider forward over bumps and braking. The seat is also not very spacious, which makes long hours in the saddle a tiring affair. Short city commutes should be fine for most, though.
Aprilia SR 175: Pillion Comfort
Pillion space is limited. It is suited only for short rides as even the pillion feels all the sharp bumps. The rear grab handle follows a form over function approach - it prioritizes looking good and sporty over being comfortable or easy to hold - it has too many sharp edges.
The 174.7cc single-cylinder, air-cooled engine makes 13PS at 7,200rpm and 14.14Nm at 6,000rpm, which is 1.58PS and 0.7Nm more than the outgoing SR 160. While it sounds marginal, it delivers a lot more punch 35-40 kmph onwards. Our test unit had a lot of play in the throttle and also needed a wider twist than most scooters.
Aprilia SR 175: City Performance
In the city, the SR 175 is very engaging to ride, masks its speed very well from a standstill to 60kmph – deceptively so – and does the sprint in 6.38 seconds. The scooter is fun to ride in the city due to its peppy performance, but is let down mainly by the suspension setup.
Aprilia SR 175: Highway Performance
On the highway, it feels more composed than the older SR 160 and manages to sustain speeds of around 85-90kmph well. Overtakes are easy if you’re willing to twist the throttle wide open. I was able to hit a speedo indicated top speed of 109kmph and it seems to be limited there. I felt it had more give but was electronically choked at this point.
Aprilia SR 175: Gearbox
Being an automatic, CVT-equipped scooter, gears or shifts aren’t relevant here. However, the throttle’s excess play does dull initial responsiveness even if it's one of the fastest scooters.
Aprilia SR 175: Mileage
Fuel efficiency isn’t the SR 175’s focus - it offers less than acceptable fuel economy for its class, mileage clearly takes a back seat to performance.
This is the SR 175’s biggest strength, the chassis has always been set up with this in mind since the start. And, the 14-inch alloy wheels wrapped in wide, round-profile tyres make it extremely agile and quick to tip into corners. For first-time riders, it may feel like the scooter is falling into a turn, but in reality it holds its line well and is very confidence-inspiring once familiar.
Aprilia SR 175: Tyres
Our media scooter came with chunky 120-section, 14-inch 'Vee Rubber' tubeless tyres that provide good all round grip levels in dry conditions. It felt skittish on uneven terrain or when road conditions weren’t optimum.
Aprilia SR 175: Brakes
Given the performance on hand, the braking capabilities need to be far better. The bite is sharp and can become unnerving initially, which is something that you could get used to over time. However, the lever feel is lacking and as a result, modulating becomes tricky. Furthermore, the ABS is very inconsistent and can be triggered fairly quickly.
Aprilia SR 175: Ride Quality
The suspension is firm, tuned for performance rather than comfort – though this is expected from a sporty scooter. For lighter riders, say below 75kg, the setup feels especially stiff. But the quality and bump absorption is definitely better than the original SR 150 but the previous SR 160 had a more pliant ride.
The Aprilia SR 175 is for a very specific audience. If you want comfort, storage, and everyday practicality, this scooter will not please you. If you value sharp and agile handling, and a sporty feel above all else, it delivers exactly that. It’s a scooter built for fun rather than sensibilities, and that’s its biggest strength and also limitation - it’s very single-minded.
Also keep in mind that Aprilia has a limited dealer and service network, and while at that - the service reports from most customers tend to not be quite as pleasant and pricey.
Aprilia SR 175: Price Analysis
At Rs 1.17 lakh (ex-showroom, after the GST 2.0 price drop), the SR 175 sits at the premium end of the scooter market. Interestingly, this price is about Rs 13,000 lower than its predecessor, the SR 160 – which was priced at Rs 1.3 lakh. Also, we think it’s worth paying the extra Rs 4,000 for the SR-GP Replica paint scheme as it provides that MotoGP special touch to the sporty Italian scooter.
The Yamaha Aerox 155 remains the fastest and most performance-focused scooter in the segment, with its liquid-cooled engine and VVA tech making it shine on highways, though its weak brakes limit you from riding it sportily. Hero’s new Xoom 160 offers maxi-scooter presence and balanced touring ability, but average plastics, dated features, and low-grip tyres hold it back. The recently launched TVS Ntorq 150, despite being the SR’s closest air-cooled rival, disappoints by feeling more like a Jupiter 150 than a true sporty upgrade over the Ntorq 125.
