GSX R1000R Expert Review

Overview

Suzuki's GSX-R1000 has been a phenomenon ever since the first edition was introduced in 2001. Ever since then, the 'Gixxer' has been widely appreciated and loved by sportbike enthusiasts around the world, earning the title of 'King of Superbikes' as a result. Of all its generations the K5 has been the most loved. However, the last major update came in 2007. From then until 2016, the sportsbike world changed drastically and Suzuki lagged behind when it came to the electronics. Now redefining the definition of Superbike is the 6th-generation GSX-R1000 or L7 which embodies the race ambition of Suzuki which is extremely passionate about the GSX-R brand’s place in motorcycle history. A team of enthusiasts who love riding and racing, and who were determined to restore the GSX-R1000’s name by making it most powerful, accelerating, GSX-R ever built. Suzuki GSX-R1000R, the flagship variant, is equipped with a host of goodies that makes it one the best superbikes available now. To let you know that you are riding something truly remarkable, it has the SHOWA Balance Free Front (BFF) forks and SHOWA Balance Free Rear Cushion (BFRC) lite rear shock, bi-directional quick-shifter, racing launch control, LED position lights, lightweight battery and a unique black LCD instrument panel display. This amazing bike faces heat from the likes of BMW S 1000 RR, Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10R, Honda CBR1000RR Fireblade and Yamaha YZF R1M. Suzuki GSX R1000R is available in only one variant and is priced at Rs.19,80,935 (Ex-showroom price, Delhi)

Design

MotoGP-inspired, Suzuki GSX-R1000R’s features a sleeker and aerodynamic body that improves handling as well as top speed on the racetrack. To achieve a slippery shape, the newly created body design by Suzuki design engineers have thoroughly tested it using various wind tunnel tests. The headlight flanked by the LED position lights is lighter and brighter in terms of light spread. New Suzuki Ram-Air Direct (SRAD) intake ducts, which have a smoother internal shape are positioned closer to the centre of the faring and the compact headlight ensures the ducts are larger than before to increase the flow of pressurised air into the air cleaner box. Titanium exhaust system is designed to help the engine deliver a wide range of performance across the red line. The tail section is made sharper for better airflow and the LED tail light looks very nice as it lights up and has a very low battery consumption. The rider seat is not too hard or not to soft and is ideally cushioned to offer good riding comfort. With the engine rotated backwards to an angle of 6 degrees, improved chassis stability, as well as aerodynamics, are achieved. FEM Analysis Technology is used to design its Aluminum twin spar style frame, which is 10 per cent lighter than the previous model. New LCD instrument panel is inspired by the GXRR MotoGP. This backlit display which shows a lot of info is very legible and with clear fonts, is readable even in bright sunlight. MotoGP inspired Metallic Triton Blue looks super attractive and so does the Pearl Glacier White colour.

Engine, Mileage & Performance

GSX-R1000 sports an all-new 999.8cc in-line four cylinder, DOHC, liquid-cooled engine which is the most powerful and cleanest running GSX-R engine ever built. It surpasses the competition as it produces a mammoth 202PS at 13,200rpm with 117.6Nm of torque at 10,800rpm with the new engine. Suzuki engineers designed this engine by employing advanced MotoGP derived technologies known as the Broad Power System and is mated to a 6-speed cassette type transmission. Bi-directional Quick Shift System in this bike provides clutchless upshifts as well as downshifts while riding. The Racing Launch Control system ensures that the racer on the track gets right off the mark by automatically limiting engine rpm and optimizing torque delivery. Fuel tank capacity is 16 litres and the expected mileage is around 9kmpl under mixed riding conditions.

Handling & Ride Quality

Ergonomics on this bike is of a supersport thereby strikes a perfect balance between the handlebars, the seat and the foot pegs. Motion Track Brake System on this bike, works with the Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) which constantly monitors vehicle movement in all 6-directions along 3-axes for Pitch, Roll and Yaw. This system avoids rear-wheel lift during very hard braking on the racetrack, and also optimises brake pressure when the motorcycle is leaning. Brakes are Brembo radial-mount monobloc callipers 320mm t-drive discs on front and at the rear, it has Nissin single-piston calliper 220mm disc. This superbike is equipped with new lightweight 6-spoke alloy wheels which ride on track ready Bridgestone RS10 low mass tyres with a new higher profile at the rear are premium high grip radials that have grippy hold even when making sharp turns on tight corners. SHOWA Balance Free Front (BFF) forks on the front ensure that rider get a top-notch level of surface feedback. Whereas, the SHOWA Balance Free Rear Cushion (BFRC) at the rear offers a new level of response needed in a racetrack environment and much better ride comfort while riding on the streets.

Features

New Suzuki GSX R1000R is packed with safety and features. New Motion Track TCS brings additional control to the ABS for controlling the mammoth power that this bike has. Now with the Suzuki Drive Mode Selector (S-DMS), you have 3 different riding modes to select for different riding conditions. Riding Mode A is for racetrack riding, Mode B can be used while cruising or touring and Mode C is for city or wet riding conditions. Peak power remains unchanged on all the three modes. The superbike gets 10 levels of traction control with level 1-4 are meant for the track racing, level 5-8 are for street or city riding and levels 9-10 are for wet riding conditions.
