Review of Royal Enfield Classic

Royal Enfield Classic OverView

Royal Enfield, one of the oldest bike manufacturing companies of the world from Great Britain, has been present in India since 1956. The company started assembling the Bullet motorcycles in 1956 and by 1962 it had a manufacturing plant in Chennai. It has been more than fifty years since the Enfield of India started its journey. The company bought the rights to use the Royal Enfield name in 1995 and thus, today Royal Enfield is the oldest motorcycle brand in the world with the Bullet model being the oldest motorcycle in production of all time. Since 1956, the brand Bullet has carved out different cult for its own, but the other models like the Royal Enfield Classic also enjoys the same marque value among the Royal Enfield lovers. Royal Enfield Classic, today is a very well known name and is one of the top selling products of Royal Enfield. This bike is offers two different options to choose from, first a Classic 350 cc engine version and a Classic 500 cc engine variant. But, for the people outside the Royal Enfield cult, the new Royal Enfield bikes are just the same replica of the old rumbling and thundering Bullet. Hence, we are going to see what are the main highlights of Royal Enfield Classic which make it completely different from its elder sibling.

Royal Enfield Classic Designing

Both the Royal Enfield Classic variants, the 350 cc version and the 500 cc version look like the original Bullet from 1950's. But, when one goes deeper into the design cues, a perfect blend between the design patterns of a vintage Bullet motorcycle and modern day bikes surfaces up on the boards. Both classic 500 and classic 350 have got a great combination of macho looks with style and share enthralling design features. The company has fitted both the variants with same sized mudguards, a fat fuel tank, single saddle seat and cased headlight, all of these features give a royal feel to the overall appearance. The fuel tank grabs the attention of the crowd with a new logo of Royal Enfield on the fuel tank. This new logo carries a Cannon with words 'Made like a gun' and gives a spectacular appearance.

Royal Enfield Classic Appearance

Both classic 500 and classic 350 does a splendid job of grabbing the attention of the viewers. The company has laid out three attractive body colors to choose from. The Classic 500cc is available in red, black and sky blue shades. While the Classic 350 is made available in red, black and silver shades. Both the variants have go a chrome finish over the engine silencer, rear fork, leg guards, and the rear view mirrors, which give striking shining ambiance. But, the colored chassis of Royal Enfield Classic 500 makes the bike look different form its sibling, which has got a black finish on its chassis. The springs employed under the seats and in the rear shock absorbers bring a vintage feel to the appearance. The other features which make both classic 500 and classic 350 a classy treat include a round shape taillight which adds a historical touch on the rear and the chromed parts, which are finished and polished with royal care.

Royal Enfield Classic Engine And Performance

It's the engine specifications of both classic 500 and classic 350, which makes them totally different from each other. The Classic 500 has got a 500 cc single cylinder, 4-stroke, OHV, SI, air-cooled engine with the revolutionary Electronic Fuel Injection technology, which is manufactured by Kehien and is also used in the proven Honda motors. While on the other hand, the Classic 350 is powered by a lighter motor with a displacement value of 350 cc and is single cylinder, 4-stroke, OHV, SI, air-cooled engine with a traditional carburetor mechanism instead of the modern day fuel injection technology.

The Classic 500 proves to be a real monster when it comes to the power and torque generation by both the siblings. Royal Enfield Classic 500 engine is tuned perfectly for churning out whooping 27.2bhp power at 5250 rpm and a peak torque value of 41.3Nm at 4000 rpm. While the twin spark engine in the Classic 350 moils out an impressive power of 19.8bhp at 5250 rpm and 28Nm torque at 4000rpm. A five-speed gearbox is deployed in both the bikes with a left side gear shift, which has got 1-N-2-3-4-5 gear shift pattern. The gear shift ratios are quite good and shifting up or down the gears is not really a tough job. The company has provided both the self and kick start options with both the bikes

Royal Enfield Classic Mileage

If the Classic 500 bests out the Classic 350 at power and torque figures then the Classic 350 outplays its elder siblings when it comes the fuel efficiency figures are concerned. Due to the higher engine capacity of the Classic 500, the bike is capable of delivering a respectable mileage amount which ranged in between 32-35 kmpl. On the other hand, the Classic 350 with its better unit construction engine and lower engine capacity gives off a fuel economy between 40-45 kmpl.

Royal Enfield Classic Braking And Handling

For having an effective control over these monsters, Royal Enfield has deployed a single 280mm disc with duel piston calipers on the front brake. While the rear brake gets 152mm drum brake for putting up an incredible stopping mechanism whenever quired. The highly responsive brake lever at the front gives an impressive and instant halt to the bike along with the rear drum brake. Thus, both the bikes blessed with great power can be stopped easily and effectively on any type of surface. The Classic 500 and Classic 350 are blessed with impressive handling mechanism. The wide wheelbase helps in providing better stability and control to the rider. A special roll over sensor is fitted under the rider's sear which switches off the ignition and cuts off the fuel supply in events like skidding or accident.

Royal Enfield Classic Safety Features

The company has equipped both the bikes with equivalent safety mechanisms for protecting the rider and the pillion in case of hazardous situations. Telescopic forks are fitted on the front for absorbing the shocks over the famous Indian roads filled with potholes. The rear gets gas filled shock absorbers for removing the jolts and jerks in an instant. The best thing about the rear shock absorbers is that they can be adjusted according to different kind of routes. Thus, the ultimate suspension system helps in giving a memorable shock free long rides on the highways and hassle free ride experience on the crowded city routes.

Royal Enfield Classic Pros

Modern yet classy royal design, better handling and stability and powerful performance.

Royal Enfield Classic Cons

A bit expensive, heavy weight makes it hard to glide through easily the traffic.
