Review of Mahindra SYM Flyte
Mahindra SYM Flyte OverView
Mahindra SYM Flyte was the first scooter launched by Mahindra Two Wheelers in India after it took over the once-illustrious Kinetic Motor Company. Having already worked its magic in many European and Asian markets under the name of X'Pro 125 before it came to India, the Flyte successfully grabbed the title of the Scooter of the Year in 2008 in India as well. The main difference between the Indian and the overseas version of this scooter is the design of its seat and the ground clearance that it offers; the Indian version features a much straighter seat design and increased ground clearance as compared to its overseas counterpart. To power the scooter, a 4-stroke engine with a displacement capacity of 125cc has been put to the job by the Mahindras. As for the competition, Mahindra Flyte is competing with the likes of Honda Activa, Honda Aviator, Suzuki Access, Hero MotoCorp Pleasure and TVS Scooty.
Mahindra SYM Flyte Designing
An exceptional blend of a girlish scooty and a boisterous scooter, which makes it an excellent unisex ride, Mahindra SYM Flyte features an overall length of 1790 mm, height of 1100 mm and width of 650 mm. With its saddle height being maintained at a reasonable 760 mm, the ground clearance that this scooter features is a good 130 mm while its wheelbase measures about 1245 mm in length. With such an intelligently proportioned structure and a wide array of additional comfort and convenience traits, the Flyte translates into an extremely pleasant ride. The seat has been well-contoured and offers ample space and a comfy seating position so that both the driver as well as the pillion rider can enjoy an easy and fatigue-free ride even over long distances. Foot-pegs and foot-rests have been provided for the riders and positioned smartly for maximum comfort. A body-coloured grab rail has been provided for the pillion-rider's advantage. For the driver, in the meantime, enough legroom has been made available at the front for a hassle-free ride.
For storage purposes, Mahindra SYM Flyte has been provided with a key hook and a small compact storage box at the front along with the best-in-class 22-litre 2-level under-seat storage compartment complete with LED illumination. To add to the convenience of the riders, fuelling has been greatly simplified in the Flyte by positioning the fuel-filler cap at the front below the handlebars instead of under the seat. Plus, there is a mobile charger fitted in the scooter right below the handlebars that further enhances to the convenience factor. As for the top of the handlebars, analogue meters have been placed there to constitute the information console. The console is broad and backlit with white light. It comprises of a large speedometer, a fuel meter and several warning lights. Other exciting features and fitment that can be found in this Mahindra scooter include impact resistant mirrors, 4-in-1 anti-theft magnetic key and 3.5 x 10 inch Zapper tyres for improved stability and manoeuvrability.
Mahindra SYM Flyte Appearance
Targeted towards the urban youth of India, Mahindra SYM Flyte gets to flaunt an exceedingly stylish and sporty outfit that could fit in perfectly with the fast-paced lives of the modern Indian youth. Beginning with the front fascia, a trendy V-shaped body-toned apron, similar to a shield, spans it together with a Rodeo-inspired mask and a pair of sleek turn indicators mounted on the grey-coloured portion. Tuning perfectly with the body-coloured front apron, are the impact resistant foldable rear view mirrors which also get adorned with the body hue. The front end shock absorbers, on the other hand, have been left naked in this scooter. As far as the side profile is concerned, trendy body graphics span across the entire space adding a spark to the scooter's attire. The rear end, in the meantime, gets to display a simple-yet-attractive tail-lamp along with a beautifully carved body-toned grab rail, completing the look of the scooter perfectly.
Mahindra SYM Flyte Engine And Performance
Mahindra SYM Flyte gets powered by a 124.6cc, 4-stroke, spark ignition engine capable of generating a maximum of 8.05bhp at 7000rpm along with a maximum of 9Nm of torque at 5500rpm, which are a pretty good set of power and torque ratings for an automatic scooter like the Flyte. With such power figures in play, this scooter offers a 0-60kmph acceleration of under 13 seconds while the maximum speed limit that it can achieve is a remarkable 80kmph. To work in synchronization with this 125cc power-mill, an automatic transmission gearbox and a 7 Ah Lead acid battery have also been loaded in the Flyte. Besides that, a secondary air injection system has also been fitted in the Flyte to ensure lesser emissions. Thanks to this very efficient mechanical set-up, riding this scooter is such a pleasant experience. And due to its compact size, it becomes extremely easy to drive it even in crowded areas.
Mahindra SYM Flyte Mileage
Equipped with a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) system, Mahindra SYM Flyte promises to return a fuel-economy of about 40kmpl, which, when combined with its 4.5-litre petrol tank capacity, accounts for a no-stop trip of not less than 180 km.
Mahindra SYM Flyte Braking And Handling
Mahindra SYM Flyte, the first scooter to be launched in the Indian market bearing the illustrious Mahindra tag, was not declared the best in its class for nothing in the year 2008. It has been geared with a good suspension system, a fine braking system and an awesome throttle response. Handling and controlling have been made extremely easy in the scooter by keeping its structure compact and its saddle height low. Assisting with this handling and controlling process is the fantastic suspension system of the scooter which comprises of telescopic forks at the front and swing arm shock absorbers at the rear end. The braking system employed for the scooter also proves to be quite efficient and worthy of the ride which it means to serve. A pair of Mechanical, Expanding shoe type, Drum brakes measuring 130 mm in diameter (for both front and rear wheels) have been chosen to constitute an effective braking system for the Flyte.
Mahindra SYM Flyte Safety Features
From safety point of view, Mahindra SYM Flyte comes loaded with a number of advanced and useful features that not only make the scooter absolutely safe to ride but also makes sure that the scooter itself stays secure at all times. First and foremost, the 130mm Drum brakes that work both for the front as well as the rear wheel constitute a pretty effective braking system for the scooter, contributing majorly to the riders' safety. Then the wide Zapper tyres, measuring 3.5 x 10 inches, which provide a strong road grip at all times, assist with the braking and also improve the handling and stability of the scooter. Plus, there is the hi-tech 4-in-1 anti-theft key system that allows one to operate all the locks with a single turn and a single key and always keep the ride completely safe and secure. In the meantime, the beautifully crafted, horn-rimmed, 35W headlamp that comes mounted on the front mask provides a bright beam of light in the dark for the driver's aid. The grab rails provided at the rear end too help a lot in keeping the pillion-rider safe and supplying the necessary support that they might need during the ride.
Mahindra SYM Flyte Pros
Easy handling and controlling, good suspension system, attractive looks, comfortable and convenient ride, good storage facilities and presence of the advanced 4-in-1 magnetic key system.
Mahindra SYM Flyte Cons
Wide scope of improvement in braking system, absence of tubeless tyres and low fuel-economy in comparison to rival scooters.
