Bajaj Pulsar 220 DTSi Review

Appearance

Lookwise, Bajaj Pulsar 220cc is the finest looking bike in the segment. If we compare it with the previous versions of the Pulsar, the difference is the airscoops. Long airscoops are provided only in Pulsar 220cc which cool the engine in a better way.

Let's start with the front fairing. Bigger airscoops and rear view mirrors make it completely different creature than its forerunners. Rear view mirrors are mounted on mask. In the same way, front turn indicators are mounted on airscoops. The machine houses high voltage twin projector lamp which ensures better visibility in worse conditions like rain, night etc. A lot of things are incorporated in new Bajaj Pulsar 220cc. Aerodynamic tank flap, anti-scratch tank pad, 3D chiseled logo are the sole property of the fuel tank. The big tank capacity is 15 litre. The fuel tank of the bike is well built and adequate space is there for rider's knee. The rider's seat is fitted a little lower than tank.

It also gets a revamped clip-on handle bar. There is welcome change in dashboard too. New indicators are there such as malfunction indicator and all digital console except tachometer. Tripmeter, fuel gauge and speedometer are in digital format. Side stand indicator is present at console with other common indicators like turn indicator, high beam and neutral indicator. Even if the bike is available in four different colours black dominates the most. Engine, alloy wheels, forks and swingarms are painted in black. The tail portion of the bike is same as it predecessors. The tail lamp is stylish and designed like an arrow to shot. LED tail lamp, short grab rails, footpegs, graphical rear side panels and step-up seat are the special feature of the tail. Six spoke black alloy wheels, same silver colour silencer are other things to be mentioned. Half naked chain looks sporty.

Engine

New Bajaj Pulsar 220cc houses the biggest carburetor, 32mm Ucal UCD 32 venturi carburetor, instead of fuel injection technology in older 220cc. Bajaj has successfully increased the maximum power from the same mill. Now the engine develops 21.04 Ps at 8500rpm and churns a maximum torque of 19.12 Nm at 6500 rpm. The engine is 4 stroke, DTS-Si, air cooled with the displacement of 220cc. The fastest Indian has five speed gearbox that follows one down and four up pattern. Starting problem, most reported problems with Bajaj bikes, will not be a worry in the machine as it comes with new auto choke inbuilt. Auto choke is reliable even in winter season. This time Bajaj has come up with redesigned clutch assembly that feels much improved. The machine is equipped with a catalytic converter that is responsible for absorbing the harmful gases from the silencer. This is done due to comply the bike with Bharat Stage 4 Pollution Norms.

Acceleration

According to the test figures, the bike takes only 4.1 seconds for a 0-60 kmph dash while at 0-100m it can achieve in merely 11.1 seconds. For 0-400m, it takes you in only 17.7 seconds. The top speed is 144 kmph, the highest in the segment.

Fuel Efficiency

Fuel Efficiency is 38.5 kmpl. However, the bike has the widest fuel tank of 15 ltrs. The reserve capacity is 3.2 litres while 2.2 litres fuel can be used.

Colours

The street fighter is available in four vibrant colours. You can have it in red, black, blue and grey. These colours are only used at fuel tank, side panels, front mudguard and rear panels. In fact, the rest part of the machine has black treatment. This makes the female charming.

Brakes

The company does not compromise on safety standards as both the tyres have disc brakes. The front one has 260mm disc brake while rear has 230mm disc brakes. These high standard disc brakes are capable of halting the New Bajaj Pulsar 220cc bike in any load and speed.

Suspension

For smooth ride, the company fitted it with latest Nitrox suspension at rear. At the front, standard telescopic 130mm stroke absorbers are used. No wonder if you feel a little jerks and smooth drive even on bumpy roads. The same Nitrox fork has been used in Bajaj Discover DTS-Si.

Wheels and Tyres

The big bike is having widest tyres which make your ride safe and fearless. The front and rear tyres have the specifications of 90/90-17 and 120/80-17 respectively. Both the tyres are tubeless so no need to worry about puncture. Black alloy wheels are added to give life to the beauty of the beast.

Wheel Base and Controlling

New Bajaj Pulsar 220cc has some big things as bigger wheelbase, big tank, big tyres and so on. The wheelbase is 1350mm that is enough to tell the story of balance and control. Special attention is paid on tyres and wheels. The tyres size is big and rear tyre wheelbase is highest in the segment. Alloy wheels and tubeless features really contribute to the safety and control over the beast. Soft compound tyres give better grip even at higher speed.

Comfortness

The motorcycle is not only a good performer on road but also a superb riding machine. The bike is provided with split seat for pillion and rear grab bars. The sitting position is purely sporty. Passenger footrest and footpegs are there to add to the comfort and safe riding experience. The tank height is not very high so it helps to have better grip on handlebars. Enough space is left for rider's knee recess.

Pros

Having the bike is value for money. Performance wise it is the best bike in India.

Cons

Engine sound is not so pleasant.
