Review of Honda Activa i
Honda Activa i OverView
Honda, the Japanese automobile giant, provides commuters as well as high performance bikes in the Indian two wheeler market. The company started its business in the Indian market in 80's by making a joint collaboration with an Indian company, Hero Cycles. This company was named Hero Honda which took over the biggest share of the Indian two wheeler market and became the number one in no time. In year 2000, Honda launched its first two wheeler without the collaboration of Hero, which was an automatic scooter named Activa. Activa got huge success in the market after which, Honda decide to move on from the collaboration in Dec 2010. And now, Honda is manufacturing its two wheelers under name Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India Limited (HMSI). After a new start, Honda took over the third position in the market and recently they took over the second position and they are also the no.1 scooter manufacturer of India. But the competition is increasing sharply in the segment and to stay forward in the competition, Honda has launched a more affordable version of Activa- Honda Activa i 110.
Now a days, people prefers automatic scooters more because of the fatigue free ride due to light weight of these scooters and lesser manual controls. The all new Honda Activa-i is completely different from the standard version of the Activa. This new scooter has got a totally new designed body which is more lighter. The scooter comes with an affordable price tag which is around Rs. 5,000 lesser than the standard Activa. The internal technology of the scooter is same as the previous models of Honda, the only differences have been made in the exterior. Activa-i is also the most affordable scooter of the company. Now, lets get into the detailing of the scooter to understand about its features.
Honda Activa i Designing
The designing of Honda Activa-i is completely different from the standard model of the Activa. The scooter has been build on an under bone type frame. The overall dimension is 1795mm x 705mm x 1115mm with a large wheel base of 1238mm. Increased length providing more space for the riders. Seat height of the scooter is 765mm which is low so the female and old riders can ride it easily. Ground clearance is increased to 165mm, which ensures trouble free ride over bumps and pits. On the matter of comfort, lots of attention has been given by the designers. Its wide and well cushioned seat is as comfortable as the seat of standard Activa. Foot-board is roomier to accommodate even tall drivers conveniently. Grab-rails are designed practically running around the rear-end of the seat. A set of foot-pegs is provided at an easy accessible position for better foot-support. The whole designing of the scooter is done in a manner that a perfect ergonomic position of both the riders can be achieved.
Honda gives much attention over convenience in its vehicles. An 18 Ltrs storage capacity of under seat boot space ensures enough lockable space for articles like a full face helmet and other things. A luggage box that can be installed under the handle bars is optional because it occupies the space over foot board. And the reduced leg space creates inconvenience for the tall riders. However, this luggage box also have a large boot space for your shopped stuffs and you won't have to carry any of that luggage. A full facing helmet can't fits this luggage box but you can keep an open face helmet in it. The keyhole to open the under-seat storage has been given at an easily reachable position. Instrument console mounted on the handlebars gets a very trendy design using the body colour graphics in it. The console includes speedometer, odometer, fuel gauge and all the required tale-tell lights. Console is clear in view and all the gauges used are analog gauges.
Honda Activa-i Appearance
Honda Activa-i has been designed in a manner that it can suit any age or gender. The scooter has a single colour paint job with Honda written on the front panel and Activa-i written on the side panels. A perfectly focused head lamp has been provided on its visor in front of the handle bars while the indicator lamps are on its front body panel. The tail lamp and the rear indicator lamps are placed together at the rear in a very trendy design. New attractive black coloured exhaust pipe has been used which is impressive. Side body panels are smaller than the standard Activa but has been designed well. Fibre is used in body panels instead of metal to reduce its cost as well as its weight. But it also reduces the reliability. A hugger fender is provided on the rear wheel to avoid water & mud splash on the pillion rider & the engine. Its front apron has been shaped in an aerodynamic style which have blinkers on it in a flowing pattern. Its rear view mirror also have a flow curve design at back which looks attractive than the simple mirrors. When we move towards the side of Honda Activa-i, small body cover panels have been used instead of full body covers which have been used in Activa standard. The overall looks of the scooter are good and standard.
Honda Activa-i Colours
The scooter comes with a single colour pain job which have 4 colour options which are- Alpha Metallic Red, Purple Metallic, Pearl Sunbeam White and Beige Metallic. That means there is a colour option for everybody. The single colour paint job suits the adults while the bright colours are the choice of youngsters.
Honda Activa i Engine And Performance
The new Activa-i uses the same 109.2 cc, forced air cooled, 4- stroke engine which comes in the standard model of Activa. The new thing is Honda Eco Technology (HET) in its engine which is used to increase its fuel economy. The performance of the scooter is also same with a maximum power of 8 bhp at 7500 rpm and a peak torque of 8.74 Nm at 5500 rpm. The acceleration of the scooter is smooth using a V-matic drive which delivers the power of the engine to its rear wheel. The scooter gives a good pick-up and frequently reaches to higher speeds. The scooter can attain a top speed of 97 kmph. Its automatic transmission and light weight gives a fatigue free ride in city traffic.
On the matter of comfort, Honda Activa-i houses the same Spring-loaded Hydraulic suspension mechanism for both its front and rear ends, which also being used in Activa. But we miss the telescopic forks at the front wheel which would be the reason of a huge disappointment for the buyers. It uses a 12V-3Ah maintenance free battery, which don't needs attention on services. Air filter used is of viscous type which has a running life of around 15,000 kms.
Honda Activa-i Mileage
Honda is using new Honda Eco Technology (HET) in the designing of the engine of Activa-i, in this 4- stroke engine, power comes in a single stroke from the combustion of the fuel and this power is stored in a flywheel. The power stored in the flywheel is used to drive the rear wheel and to drive the reciprocating parts of the engine in remaining 3 strokes. The technology is all about to decrease the power lose in driving the reciprocating engine parts by decreasing the weight of these parts. This results in an increased fuel economy of the engine. Using the technology, the mileage of this new scooter is upto 60 kmpl according to ARAI. It is sure that this will not go down than the 47 kmpl in city traffic.
Honda Activa i Braking And Handling
To control the speed of the scooter, 130 mm drum brakes have been provided on both the front and the rear wheels. Honda's Combi Brake System (CBS) has been used for giving more safer braking on high speeds. The technology makes both the rear and and the front brakes active when the rear brake is applied while the front brake works independently. By using the technology, the braking distance of the vehicle can be decreased upto 32%, which makes emergency braking better. In the scooter 10 inch tyre at both the rear and the front wheel giving a good grip on roads. The handle is mounted at a perfect position which is making the vehicle stable even at the time of cornering. The suspension system also plays its part well, and makes the scooter easy to turn even on the sharpest of turns. Its large ground clearance making it stable on speed breakers and pits.
Honda Activa i Safety Features
The scooter have been blessed with many features related to the safety of both the riders and the vehicle. Its 10 inch wide tubeless tyres gives better road grip which reduces the chance of skidding and ensuring lesser trouble due to punctures. Some times we have to stop the vehicle in a very short distance which is called emergency braking. Its CBS technology helps in the condition of emergency braking. The scooter uses a maintenance free battery and a viscous air filter which makes the scooter able for safer long journeys.
Honda Activa i Pros
Peppy engine, excellent mileage, standard looks, good stability and better comfort.
Honda Activa i Cons
Low durability due to fibre body, it misses telescopic suspension, full body cover side panels are not provided.
Honda Activa i Review
I purchased an Activa I from Doshi Honda on 1st of March . Here is my review 1.After 6 months, the mileage is around 45 Km which is not so great 2.The ride is not so smooth(like the bike is moving forcefully) 3.Handling and looks - I found it great 4. Morning start problem as found in others - Not as of now. Will need to wait until winter.
I bought the activa i white colour from 21 Honda andheri at Rs. 52000/- Before 1st service it was giving me a mileage of almost 40 kmpl. After 500 km run i completed 1st service and now run another 500 km. But disappointed by its poor mileage of 33 kmpl. The body is made of light fiber which has reduced the weight of the vehicle and therefore it is convenient for city drive. The company claim mileage of 60 kmpl but how can a Honda making such a poor technology. I am having another Indian Bajaj Pulsar which is giving 55 kmpl. Even Indian Maruti Celerio on road real world mileage in city is 18...
