Delhi to Observe 'Car Free Day' on January 22, 2016

Delhi Car Free Day

Delhi is planning for a ‘Car Free Day’ on January 22, 2016, and daily commuters will be giving up their two-wheelers and four-wheelers for a full day to help control the rising pollution levels. Cycles or public transport will be the mode of commute for the day. Mr. Arvind Kejriwal, Chief Minister of Delhi has requested all the citizens to join him by using bicycles to go for work. According to Gopal Rai, Transport Minister of Delhi, the government is getting warm response from people for these initiatives and this month in Dwarka, Arvind Kejriwal led a cycle rally to flag off the Car Free Day and numerous members from IAS, DANICS along with Delhi Chief Secretary KK Sharma were a part of this rally. He also informed the citizens that the government is working on cycle tracks in the city to add to this initiative.

There was a 60 percent reduction in pollution level in the area between Red Fort and India Gate when Car Free Day was first observed on October 22, 2015. Mr. Arvind Kejriwal said, "On January 22, we will organise Car-Free Day across Delhi. I appeal people to go to their offices by cycle or public transport on that day. I will also go to my office on cycle on January 22.” He added, "If 5-10 percent of people follow our appeal and use cycle and public transport on January 22, it will also be big achievement for us." Kejriwal also spread the information about his initiative on social media. He tweeted, "22 Dec-Car free day in East Del. 22 Jan-lets all leave car 4 one day n go office on cycle or public transport. I'll go 2 my office on cycle."
