Yamaha FZS-FI V3

The FZ-S FI V3’s front heavy design has been around for some time now. It gets a split-LED headlight setup and chunky tank extensions. The overall design looks pretty clean with minimal stickering. But considering the sporty design language of today’s bikes in the 150cc-160cc segment, the FZ-S FI V3 is in need of a complete refresh now. Also, the build quality could have been better with inconsistent panel gaps and low-quality switchgear. 

The FZ-S FI V3’s 149cc, single-cylinder engine is designed to offer good mileage rather than power-packed performance. As such, it doesn’t have the instant acceleration from the start. Instead the engine offers ample torque in the mid-range, with most of the power available in the 4,000-7,000rpm range after which the performance tends to die out. Combined with the short gear ratios, the FZ-S FI V3 is a very good commuter bike with lots of usable acceleration in the city. Our tests revealed a mileage output of 49.31kmpl in the city and 55.42kmpl on the highway.

The bike is very agile and changes directions very quickly. It also feels stable while cornering and the chassis and suspension setup offer very good confidence when you are navigating the corners or city traffic. The Yamaha FZ-S FI V3’s suspension setup soaks up bumps and potholes really well. Also the slightly sporty riding posture helps in being in control. And the brakes offer good bite to complement the overall great handling abilities. 

The easy-to-reach handlebar along with the slightly rear-set footpegs, upright riding posture and the carved-out tank design allows the rider to sit comfortably for long commutes. The well-cushioned seat adds to the comfort and a kerb weight of 135kg means the bike is easy to live with everyday.  

The LED headlight’s throw and spread on the road is quite decent but a more intense output would have been ideal. It gets a fully-digital LCD instrument console that gives out readings such as speedometer, tachometer, fuel gauge and other usual information. The layout is clean and easily readable. It also gets Bluetooth connectivity through the Yamaha Motorcycle Connect app. That said, there’s no turn-by-turn navigation, which would’ve helped in everyday commutes.

The FZ series in India started out as a sporty 160cc bike with the FZ16. So, if you are in the market for a sporty 150cc bike and are considering the FZ-S FI V3, then you will be disappointed as it focuses more on being a commuter rather than being a sporty bike. The smaller engine’s characteristics along with the upright riding posture and the styling make it a very good 150cc commuter bike with a hint of sportiness.
