TVS Apache RTR 160

The TVS RTR 160 sports a relatively conservative design compared to the more aggressive Apache RTR 160 4V. However, its eyebrow-shaped Daytime Running Lamps (DRLs) and muscular fuel tank extensions add some sporty vibes to an otherwise simple design. Despite its age, the Apache RTR 160 still is a handsome looking bike and the subtle updates have managed to keep the design fresh. The neatly done graphics on the fuel tank and on the tail panels make the bike look premium too.

Moving to the features, the RTR 160 comes with a fully-digital instrument cluster, just like the Apache RTR 160 4V. It comes with smartphone connectivity (only in the Bluetooth-equipped variant) with turn-by-turn navigation, telemetry data readouts (info regarding acceleration time, top speed, lean angle, among others), call/SMS alert, crash alert, low-fuel warning and navigation assist to the nearest petrol pump, among other standard information. It also gets segment-first riding modes, which is explained in the performance section of the review. Other notable features include the first-in-segment Glide Through Technology that allows the rider to move at low speeds with just the clutch and no throttle input). It works in first gear up to 7kmph, up to 12kmph in second, and up to 17kmph in third gear. The bike also gets an all-LED headlight and tail light with the indicators being bulbs. For safety, it gets a single-channel Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) as standard.

Powering the TVS Apache RTR 160 is a 159.7cc single-cylinder air-cooled engine. While the engine felt dated before, the latest version has been updated heavily with multiple riding modes. It comes with Sport, Urban and Rain riding modes, with different output figures. In Sport mode, the engine churns out 16.04PS at 8750rpm and 13.85Nm at 7000rpm. On the other hand, in Rain and Urban modes, the engine makes less power at 13.3PS at 8000rpm and 12.7Nm at 6500rpm respectively. The engine loves to be revved, and the Apache is great when it comes to straight line acceleration. However, the refinement could have been better at highway speeds.

TVS claims the tank cowl is designed to not only make the bike more aerodynamic, but also  reduces engine heat by a massive 10 degree Celsius. In Sport mode, the claimed top speed of Apache RTR 160 stands at 107kmph, whereas it drops to 97kmph in Urban and Rain modes. The engine works alongside a 5-speed gearbox and the fuel tank can hold 12 litres of fuel.

The Apache RTR 160 is built on a double-cradle frame which is suspended upon conventional telescopic fork and dual gas-charged rear shock absorbers. While the suspension is on the firmer side, the Apache can quickly change directions. For brakes, it has a 270mm petal disc brake at the front and a 130mm drum unit at the rear (or you can get an optional 200mm disc).  Petal discs offer greater surface area compared to conventional rounded discs, and hence help in better heat dissipation. That said, the brakes feel a bit spongy.  

Its 17-inch wheels are shod with 90/90-section front tubeless tyres on all variants. However, at the rear, the drum and disc variant get 110/80 tubeless tyre whereas the top-end disc with Bluetooth version gets a fatter 120/70 rear tyre. The bike isn’t too heavy, weighing 137kg for the drum variant and 139kg for the disc version. At 790mm, the seat height is reasonably accessible too. The 180mm ground clearance is generous enough for our Indian roads as well.

It’s important to note that both the drum and the base disc variants get a fully-digital instrument cluster but without the smartphone connectivity. The disc variant with Bluetooth gets smartphone connectivity with all the features mentioned earlier. The top-end variant also gets a fatter rear tyre. Thankfully, riding modes are standard across all variants.

Verdict

Over the years, the TVS Apache RTR 160 2V started showing its age among more modern competitors. However, with the latest update, the Apache 160 is more feature-packed than ever, closing in the gap between its sportier sibling, the Apache 160 4V. All in all, if you want a sporty commuter with lots of smart features, the Apache RTR 160 2V is a great choice.
