Expert Review
TVS has launched the Apache RTR 160 with single-channel ABS. Compared to its non-ABS counterpart, the new bike carries a premium of Rs 6,640 for the rear disc brake equipped variant and Rs 6,140 for the drum brake equipped variant. In addition, the bike gets new graphics, new instrument console art dials, new seat and
new clip-on handlebar end weights for reduced vibrations.
Powering the motorcycle is a 159.7cc, single-cylinder engine capable of producing 15.3PS of power and 13Nm of torque. This air-cooled engine is mated to a 5-speed gearbox. It gets telescopic forks at the front and dual gas-charged shock absorbers at the rear. Braking is via a 270mm petal disc at the front and 130mm drum unit at the rear. However, the top-spec variant gets a 200mm rear disc as standard.
The Apache RTR 160 competes with the Honda Xblade, Bajaj Pulsar 150 and the Hero Xtreme Sports.
Prices for the Apache RTR 160 variants are:
Apache RTR 160 STD - Rs 78,760
Apache RTR 160 Rear Disc - Rs 81,089
Race Edition Apache RTR 160 Drum - Rs 79,760
Race Edition Apache RTR 160 Rear Disc - Rs 82,089
*all prices, ex-showroom Delhi
Design and Features
In terms of design, the RTR 160 sports a relatively conservative design compared to the more aggressive Apache RTR 160 4V. However, its eyebrow-shaped DRLs and muscular fuel tank extensions add a bit of aggression to the otherwise staid design. The seat is a single piece unit
Moving to the features, the RTR 160 misses out on updates given to the RTR 160 4V. Instead, it settles for a basic blue backlit semi-digital instrument console and LED DRLs. In comparison, its rivals like the Honda X-Blade comes with features such as a fully-digital instrument console and LED headlamps, while being cheaper by around Rs 1,000 or so.
Braking and Handling
The Apache RTR 160 is built on a double-cradle frame which is suspended upon conventional telescopic front forks and dual gas-charged rear shock absorbers. The braking setup comprises of a 270mm petal disc brake at the front and a 130mm drum unit at the rear (200mm disc optional). Its 17-inch wheels are shod with 90/90 front and 110/80 rear tubeless tyres. ABS has been given a miss here and isn’t even offered as an option.
Safety and Features
For braking, it gets a 270mm front petal disc and 130mm rear drum, with a 200mm rear disc available as an optional extra. Both bikes now get single channel ABS as standard.
