Who owns Royal Enfield?
Royal Enfield, a beloved motorcycle brand in India, has a fascinating history that began in England way back in 1901. Fast forward to 1949, K. R. Sundaram Iyer set up Madras Motors in India to bring British bikes, including Royal Enfield bikes, into the country. The Indian Army's order for 500 350cc Bullets in 1952 marked a pivotal moment, kickstarting India's affair with the iconic Bullet.
In 1955, Royal Enfield teamed up with Madras Motors to establish Enfield India, leading to the opening of a factory in Tamil Nadu where the Royal Enfield Bullet was assembled from kits shipped from the UK. Despite Royal Enfield's UK factory closing in 1967, Enfield India continued producing Bullets under license, eventually exporting them to the UK and Europe starting in 1977.
A significant shift occurred in 1994 when the Eicher Group, an Indian company known for making tractors and commercial vehicles, acquired the bikemaker, making Royal Enfield an Indian-owned and operated entity.
Today, Royal Enfield isn't just an Indian phenomenon; it's a global sensation with a dedicated fanbase. Its motorcycles are available in over 60 countries, gaining popularity in markets like the United States and Europe.

Why is Royal Enfield famous?
Royal Enfield has been an aspirational brand for many Indians as its first and longest-running product, the Bullet exuded a premium, macho appeal. Then with the development of the Royal Enfield Classic 350, Royal Enfield got a brand new lease of life in a market filled with cheaper, quicker alternatives. The Classic 350 gave buyers a taste of vintage motorcycling but wrapped in a reasonably modern package. The Bullet and the Classic played such an instrumental role in the brand that it essentially laid the foundation on which Royal Enfield was able to expand its horizons to newer platforms, and also by extension, international markets. Royal Enfield sells not just a product, but an idea of a lifestyle centered around motorcycles. This is why Royal Enfield is famous.
Why are Royal Enfield bikes so heavy?
Royal Enfield has had the tradition of using metal body panels all over the bike. This coupled with the large capacity long-stroke engines (that too with heavy crankshaft assembly) and equally beefy chassis to go with the design and dynamics are the reasons why Royal Enfield bikes are heavy. That said, Royal Enfield has worked on the weight issue in newer products. A case in point is the Royal Enfield Hunter 350, which is currently the lightest Royal Enfield bike in India.
Which is best Royal Enfield or Jawa?
Both brands offer a unique motorcycling experience. While most Royal Enfield bikes are for those who want a retro bike that offers a properly relaxed “dug-dug” riding experience, Jawa bikes generally have a hint of brashness to them, something that stays true to the original vintage Jawas.
