Acceleration, fuel efficiency and other real-world figures compared!

Suzuki’s Gixxer 250 has been positioned as a slightly more performance-oriented option to the Yamaha FZ25 while not being as outright sporty and racy as the KTM 250 Duke. We have a comparison review between the Gixxer 250 and FZ25 coming soon but just how sporty is the Gixxer 250? We have the numbers to show for it and here’s how it stacks up against the quarter-litre Austrian naked.

Acceleration:

Suzuki Gixxer 250

KTM 250 Duke

0-60kmph

3.62 seconds

3.51 seconds

0-100kmph

9.80 seconds

8.49 seconds

There was no doubt that the extra oomph of the KTM would help it propel off the line quicker than the Gixxer. The extra 3.5PS and 1.4Nm produced by the more advanced 248.8cc liquid-cooled 4V DOHC motor of the KTM is able to overcome the 5kg weight disadvantage that it has on the Gixxer 250.

Roll-ons:

Suzuki Gixxer 250

KTM 250 Duke

30-70kmph in 3rd gear

4.34 seconds

4.35 seconds

40-80kmph in 4th gear

5.55 seconds

6.09 seconds

Both motorcycles possess very tractable motors. However, it is the Gixxer that has the wider powerband, which helps it post significantly better in gear roll-on acceleration timings. The Duke’s motor comes alive only after 6000rpm. You really have to wring the throttle to get it going. You would need to downshift a cog or two to make swift overtaking manoeuvres.

Braking:

Suzuki Gixxer 250

KTM 250 Duke

100kmph-0

58.50m

51.38m

60kmph-0

20.55m

19.98m

Even though there is some vagueness to the brake feel of the 250 Duke, there is no debate regarding which one is the better stopper. The feedback is quite similar to the old gen 390 Duke which stopped at a moment’s notice but did not provide any feedback whatsoever. Sadly, the Suzuki’s brakes are absolutely shocking. It takes longer to come to a halt, the ABS intervention is inconsistent and there is no feedback. This is especially disheartening as this has not been an issue on other Suzukis.

Mileage:

Suzuki Gixxer 250

KTM 250 Duke

City

41.56kmpl

41kmpl

Highway

41.40kmpl

35.66kmpl

Fuel tank capacity

12-litre

13.4-litre

Great tractability equates great fuel efficiency figures as both motorcycles are on par when it comes to city fuel efficiency numbers. Out on the highway, it is the Gixxer 250 that proves to be the more fuel-efficient motorcycle of the two. Even though it has a smaller fuel tank, the extra range means that you will be able to extend your highway stint a little longer than what you would on the KTM.
