Is the new SP 125 just a rebadged CB Shine with a new engine? Read on to find out

Honda has unveiled the all-new SP 125, the brand’s second BS6-compliant two-wheeler after the 2019 Activa 125. The BS6-compliant 125cc motorcycle is around Rs 7,300 more expensive than the drum CBS variant of the CB Shine SP. Are there any differences between the two apart from the BS6-compliant motor? Here’s what we found out:

Engine:

The most important and obvious difference is the engine. The new 124cc fuel injected motor makes 10.88PS and 10.9Nm of torque, making it 0.57PS and 0.6Nm more powerful than the Shine SP. What’s interesting is that Honda claims that this new motor is 16 per cent more efficient when compared to the CB Shine SP. Like its predecessor, the SP 125, too, gets a 5-speed gearbox.

Underpinnings:

Under the skin, the SP 125 is essentially a CB Shine SP. It shares the same frame, same suspension and even the braking hardware. Even though both motorcycles share the same underpinnings, the SP 125 is 13mm longer, 18mm higher and 23mm wider than the Shine SP. At 1285mm, even its wheelbase has been stretched by 19mm.

Features:

The BS6-compliant SP 125 is equipped with several segment-first features. It gets an LED headlamp and a fully digital instrument cluster which displays useful rider information such as real-time efficiency, range, average fuel efficiency, service reminder, and gear position indicator, among others. It also gets an ACG starter for silent starts like the new Activa 125 as well as an engine kill switch.

Design:

Over here, things get a little bleak as both motorcycles look similar. However, to help people differentiate between the two, Honda has tweaked the design ever so slightly. For instance, the new SP 125 gets new decals and four new paint options: green, grey, blue and red.

Variants:

The CB Shine SP is available in four variants: drum, drum CBS, disc and disc CBS and is priced from Rs 63,857 to Rs 69,497. The SP 125, on the other hand, comes in just two variants: disc and drum, with prices starting from Rs 72,900 (all prices ex-showroom).
