Overall ride experience and Ather’s charging infrastructure are the reasons behind the e-scooter’s popularity in Bengaluru

  • Ather’s current assembly line can produce around 35,000 scooters annually.
  • The company intends to ramp up production in the near future with a new facility.
  • This should enable it to roll out around half a million to 1 million units annually.

Ather Energy has announced that its top-of-the-line scooter, the Ather 450, has been sold out until September 2019 thanks to an overwhelming response. Currently, Ather Energy only sells the scooter at its home base in Bengaluru. The scooter’s pliant ride along with features that can be benchmarked against the best petrol powered scooters in the country are some of the reasons behind the Ather 450’s success. Ather Energy’s strong ecosystem, which includes well-planned charging stations, experience centres, and over the air (OTA) updates, are the other reasons why the e-scooter has become so popular in one of India’s biggest IT hubs.

According to company officials, Ather Energy’s production line can currently churn out around 35,000 units annually. However, considering the high demand for the Ather 450, the company intends to ramp up production by setting up a new manufacturing facility in the near future. This should enable the manufacturer to produce between half a million to one million e-scooters annually.

The positive growth does come with its own list of hiccups though. Since Ather Energy is a homegrown startup, it produces most of its parts in house. This means that the company had to design and develop each part from scratch. And since its supplier base was brand new as well, it resulted in unforeseen delays. However, Ather says it has overcome these issues and has big plans for the future, one of which was announced just yesterday. You can read more about it here.

Last but not the least, both the Ather 450 and 340 have received a price revision. The 450 will now set you back by Rs 1.28 lakh while the Ather 340 costs Rs 1.13 lakh (both prices on-road Bengaluru). You can read about it in detail here.
