  • Gets improved electronics and mechanicals.
  • The new bike is 10kg lighter than before.

BMW Motorrad India has teased the litre-class S 100 XR via its social media channels, hinting that it could be launched towards the end of June. For 2020, the 1000 XR comes with a Euro 5-compliant 999cc inline-four motor but misses out on BMW’s ShiftCam technology. It also ditches the asymmetric bulb-type headlight setup for symmetric LED units, just like the S 1000 RR.

Powering the XR is the same 999cc inline-four engine that’s seen on the S 1000 RR. However, it’s been retuned to make 165PS of power and 114Nm of peak torque (same as before). It also does away with BMW's ShiftCam technology that offers an even spread of power throughout the rev range.

In terms of electronic rider aids, the S 1000 XR features traction control, wheelie control, engine drag torque control, a quick-shifter and hill start assist, all of which is monitored and tweaked by a six-axis IMU. The entire package is held together using an aluminium composite bridge frame.

The XR's hardware includes an electronically adjustable suspension setup which makes minor tweaks on the fly to tackle undulations. The front and rear comprise of a 45mm USD fork and monoshock sourced from ZF. The bike comes fitted with 17-inch road-biased tyres given its sport touring characteristics.  Braking is taken care of by twin 320mm discs up front and a 220mm single disc at the rear, both from Hayes. The S 1000 XR has gone through a strict diet and has shed 10kg over the previous-gen model.

Considering the updates, we expect the 2020 BMW S 1000 XR to be priced around 18.5 lakh (ex-showroom).
