Ninja ZX 10R ABS Expert Review
There was a time when the Indian performance bike market was confined to 150cc motorcycles. The riders, though tightly bounded by their financial limits and lack of upper-end choices, still craved for more power gushing out from their bike’s mill. Enter the end of first decade of 21st century, and big Jap players like Yamaha and Suzuki introduced their iconic biggies like R1 and ’Busa, which was, in itself, a revolution in the history of motorcycle era here. We all know how super-capable these machines are, but curse the levying of heavy imports these bikes came stickered with, leading to their eye-watering prices, in the range of sub 15 lakh rupees. Still, even in a meagre number, these bikes managed to leave their trademarks on Indian roads officially. This brave step by the two Jap players inspired other big names from all over the world to make Indians taste their exotic delicacies. Some manufacturers like KTM and Harley Davidson have successfully by following a bottom-to-top approach manner. One such manufacturer is Kawasaki, which after enjoying their own share of pie of success with the Ninja 250R/300 and 650R, are now trying to lure the more mature riders by offering one of their most advanced bike till date, here in India, the Kawasaki Ninja Zx 10r, through the alliance of Kawasaki and Bajaj.
Liter class superbikes have the whole universal right to look mean, and in these standards, this sharp Kawasaki purely fits in the bill. This bike looks much more premium and aggressive, with the added visual bulk than the previous gen model. The moment you see the front view of this bike, and your heart will get steal. The twin extended headlights are separated by a false air-inlet which gives this bike an angular face with some nice sharp details. Along with the headlights, the two tone fairing with an up-raised transparent visor also provides support to the rear view mirrors with turn indicators in-built in them. The short front fender has some crisp noticeable lines which make it look pointed even when viewed from sideways. This sharpness finds its way in the three-spoke alloy wheels too, which look lustrous with those racing stripes and humongous disc plates. Move to the side of this bike and you will find how Kawasaki has played gently with its two tone scheme on the bike, with the dual colored fuel tank and side fairing gelling well with each other. The running sharp graphics on the side fairing looks extremely sporty while air-outlets and integrated engine help a lot to provide the much needed aerodynamic styling. And when the rear is to be approached, the combined twin mufflers, LED tail lamp, split seat and up-swept rear cowl further give an enviable character to the rear. As expected from a bike of this size, the minimalistic rear fender carries the number plate and side indicators of Kawasaki Ninja Zx 10r. The completely digital instrument console is fully kitted, with an angular bar type LED tachometer which is placed above the multifunction LCD which displays a lot of usual information digital speedometer, odometer, clock, trip meter and fuel gauge. It’s a two way adjustable LCD with blue back lit which also displays gear position indicator, fuel consumption and power mode indicator. All the other essential tell-tale lights indicators are also placed in this instrument console in the LED fashion. Though available in only a single color option of its trademark Green with Black combo, this machine manages to turn the heads on roads and jaw-dropping expressions on the traffic signals, kudos to its razor-sharp figure.
No matter what ever the looks are, a true performance lover drools for the power-mill the most, and here, Kawasaki scores heavily. The Kawasaki Ninja Zx 10r uses an ultra-refined four cylinder, 4-stroke 998cc engine, liquid-cooled, DOHC engine which pumps out a stupendous power output of 197 bhp at 13000 rpm, breathing through its 16 valves, and churns out the a healthy torque of 112 Nm which arrives at 11500 rpm and is married to a six-speed manual gearbox with one gear down and five gears up-shift pattern. Thanks to the ultra-light weight of this bike, it achieves the class leading power to weight ratio which is reflected back in its performance. The bike reaches 0-100 sprint in a quick 3 seconds. This bike proves its cheetah-like credentials in its quick acceleration timings. This is the magic of immediate throttle responses of ZX-10R that without any effort, it can cross the speed mark of 100kmph in its first gear itself. This highly refined DOHC engine has an air intake, which reduces the noise and improves it high speed performance. The aerodynamic fabulousness of this bike, light clutch and the tall ratios from the 6-speed tranny helps it to reach the segment-best max speed of 287 kmph and yield a not-so-important-for-a-1000cc fuel efficiency of an overall 10 kmpl.
The Kawasaki Ninja Zx 10r have fully adjustable and inverted 41mm telescopic forks at its front, while it features horizontal back-link with gas charged, adjustable mono shock at the back. The bike sports those gorgeous petal disc brakes on its both wheels, with the front wheel possessing dual disc brakes of 310mm and the rear disc brake being a 220mm unit. The bike also features the much desirable electronic aid of an adjustable ABS for precise braking. The bike has a ground clearance of 135mm which improves the aerodynamics of this bike at high speeds and enables it to turn easily at slow speeds. The perfect wheelbase of 1425mm makes it stable at extremely towering speeds during the frequent lane changes. The bike manages to maintain a perfect road grip thanks to its wide 120/70 R17 front and 190/55 R17 rear and a 3-way adjustable Kawasaki advanced traction control system. The incredible electronic steering makes this bike a child’s play accurately at the speed of 280kmph, while the ABS-assisted braking system ensures safe and precise braking at high speeds, while not offering a harsh ride.
As far as the safety equipments are concerned, Kawasaki Ninja Zx 10r comes equipped with Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and a 3-way adjustable Traction Control System, which maintains the stability of the motorcycle even at towering speeds.
