Hero Super Splendor

The new Hero Super Splendor has been designed with a more fluid, contemporary touch while not straying too much from the Splendor’s utilitarian design language. For starters, the headlamp cowl retains the familiar silhouette but the flyscreen is slightly sportier. The utility box under the fuel tank is now smaller, and the side panels get silver highlights which neatly cover the carburettor. At the rear, the grab rail is merged with the tail-section of the bodywork for a more contemporary look. The graphics on the bodywork is also new, and the bike comes in nine colour choices while the Xtec variant gets three colour choices.

Powering this commuter bike is a 124.7cc, single-cylinder, air-cooled motor from the new Glamour. It delivers 10.7PS at 7500rpm and 10.6Nm of torque at 6000rpm. A 4-speed transmission transfers the power to the rear wheel. The engine’s efficiency is enhanced by i3S start-stop technology which switches off the ignition if it idles for a while. It turns back on when the clutch lever is depressed. This tech should improve fuel efficiency when ridden through roads clogged by traffic. The i3S feature is switchable too.

Telescopic forks up front and twin five-step preload adjustable shock absorbers at the rear are mounted on the tubular double cradle frame. The ride quality is relatively stiffer than the previous-gen bike. The chassis allows for agile handling at low speeds but needs to instil more confidence at higher speeds.

The bike is easy to ride and flickable at slow city speeds. Braking duties are handled by 130mm drum brakes at the front and rear. A 240mm front disc brake is available for the disc brake variant. The bite from the brakes is good and provides ample confidence while stopping. 

The Hero Super Splendor provides a good ride quality combined with its flickable handling characteristics. The ride quality is stiffer over bumps and potholes but the comfy seat manages to somehow balance it out, translating to an overall comfortable riding experience. 

The instrument cluster remains an analogue unit with a digital inset. It includes the speedometer, fuel gauge, neutral and side-stand indicator, and comes with a self-starter. The Super Splendor Xtec variant gets a fully digital instrument console with Bluetooth connectivity for calls and SMS alerts. The Xtec variant also gets an LED headlight.

The iconic Splendor is still running strong and the Super Splendor is a very capable 125cc commuter motorcycle. It offers good performance, should offer superb mileage, comfortable ride quality and even a digital instrument console in the Xtec variant. And with prices starting from Rs 80,848 for the regular variant and Rs 85,178 (all prices ex-showroom) for the Xtec variant, it is a very viable option to consider if you are on the market for a reliable 125cc commuter bike.
