Indian Two-Wheeler Market Sales Report: July 2016

Honda recorded its highest ever sales in July 2016, however, Hero MotoCorp is still leading the market.

The month of July 2016 was in the favour of Honda Motorcycles & Scooter India (HMSI) as it gained a noticeably bigger share of the Indian market. The company not only recorded its highest ever sales during the last month, but its popular scooter Activa was also announced as the bestselling two-wheeler of India. But, besides all these reasons to rejoice for HMSI, Hero MotoCorp (HMCL) continues to enjoy the leadership position in the market with the largest fleet of commuter bikes in India. Apart from this Hero-Honda battle, other companies are also enjoying the monsoon with a hike in their sales records. So, let's have a look at the Indian two-wheeler market statistics for major players during July 2016.

Hero MotoCorp Ltd (HMCL): Celebrating the leadership position for years now, HMCL sold 5,32,113 units of two-wheelers during the month of July 2016. This is a growth of 9.13 percent over the corresponding month last year when the company had sold 4.87,580 units. Despite the Honda Activa outselling the Hero Splendor, Hero secures 4 positions in the top 5 list. Also, its Glamour is outselling the Honda Shine for many consecutive months, claiming the bestselling 125cc motorcycle spot in the market. The company is already doing more than well in the motorcycle business, and now their main focus will be the scooter segment till the next fiscal.

Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI): Backed by ever growing customer demand, HMSI broke its own sales records in July 2016. The company sold a total of 4,53,844 units in July 2016 over 3,89,555 unit sales in the corresponding month last year. With this, Honda's monthly sales crossed the 4.5 lakh unit milestone and registered a growth of 17 per cent, which is nearly double that of the 9 per cent total industry growth. Despite selling lesser motorcycles as compared to Bajaj, Honda scored a 7 per cent growth in the respective segment. Overall sales in the scooter segment registered a hike of 19 percent, crossing the 3 lakh unit mark for the first time.

Bajaj Auto Limited (BAL): The Pune based automaker registered overall sales of 2,85,527 units in the two-wheeler business last month. The company registered an overall growth of 1 per cent as compared to the 2,82,433 motorcycles sold in July 2015. Exports of the company dipped by 20 percent while it saw a hike of 21 per cent in the domestic market.

TVS Motor: TVS Motor Company clocked a sales growth of 14 per cent during the month of July 2016. The total sales increased from 2,18,321 units recorded in July 2015 to 2,48,002 units in July 2016. The company registered a minor fall of 2 per cent in the scooter segment, while the motorcycle sales of the company saw a hike of 23 per cent.

India Yamaha Motor: With a sales growth of 12 per cent, Yamaha sold 65,244 units in July 2016 as against 58,477 units sold last July. The company continues to maintain an upward trend in sales, riding on the back of its updated product line-up with the addition of the Alpha disc brake variant and the new Ray-ZR.

Royal Enfield: Continuing its strong sales performance in 2016 Royal Enfield posted sales of 53,378 motorcycles in combined domestic wholesale and exports in July 2016, recording a growth of 31 per cent over the same period last year. Domestic sales of the company stood at 52,128 units, with a growth of 31 per cent, while exports remained at 1,250 units with a 40 per cent hike.
