Things We Like in Hness CB350

  • Retro styling has been beautifully executed
  • Loaded with features like all-LED lighting, traction control, and a modern semi-digital instrument console

  • Brakes offer superb stopping power

Things We Dont Like in Hness CB350

  • Pricing could have been better
  • Restricted Big Wing dealership network
  • Riding at lower speeds in higher gears is difficult and will need frequent gear changes
BikeDekho Verdict:
While the CB350 looks attractive, has quite some features and is overall quite comfortable, the engine's performance was a bit disappointing. The lack of low-end torque, especially, doesn't make it as enjoyable to ride as much as say the Royal Enfield Classic 350

Honda Highness Review

The Honda CB350 H’ness stands as Honda's entry into the 300-plus cc classic motorcycle segment in India against the Royal Enfield Classic 350. Recognizing the Classic 350 as the benchmark in this category, Honda has crafted the CB350 with a distinctive old-school design, a potent engine, and a variety of additional features.

Design

The design of the Honda CB350 H’Ness draws clear inspiration from Honda's legendary retro models, notably the Honda CB750 and CB1100.

At the front, it features a classic round LED headlight with a chrome nacelle. Complementing this are a chrome mudguard and alloy wheels. The bike's distinctive fuel tank, adorned with a nostalgic Honda badge exuding 1970s charm, adds to its unique styling.

Key design elements include the Honda badge on the engine case, round LED indicators, and the striking contrast between the black finish of the engine and the chrome accents on the fins. Despite an overall well-balanced styling, there's a somewhat unconventional gap between the rear tyre and the mudguard.

Setting it apart in its segment, the motorcycle boasts exceptional fit and finish levels, with premium quality evident in the switchgear.

Engine, Mileage & Performance

CB350 lets out a robust rumble when you turn on the engine that gracefully evolves into a melodious idle. As you ride along, the standout feature is the remarkably light clutch action. Shifting into first gear using the traditional heel-and-toe shifter delivers a satisfying clunk, signalling the beginning of your ride.

The throttle response leans towards the mild side, accompanied by the pleasing sound of the exhaust, enhancing the overall riding experience. On an open road, should you decide to unleash the throttle, the response might not meet high expectations. The CB350's motor exhibits modest torque at low rpm, offering a spirited acceleration. The exhaust note, however, may create an illusion of greater speed than you are actually riding on. The bike exhibits a lack of enthusiasm at lower rpm, with a noticeable flat spot in performance until surpassing approximately 4-5000 rpm, where it suddenly comes alive.

In our real-world tests, the Honda H'ness CB350 achieves a mileage of 45.8 kmpl in the city and 42.17 kmpl on the highway.

While the H’ness CB350 might not dazzle with outstanding performance, it excels in refinement, featuring an exceptionally smooth gearbox that reflects Honda's commitment to quality. The engine's inclination towards higher rpm gives it a character more reminiscent of Jawa than Royal Enfield. Navigating city speeds is effortless, thanks to the adept tall third gear and featherlight clutch, making it ideal for congested traffic. However, the fifth gear proves overly tall, more suited for maintaining triple-digit speeds on the highway. Overtaking at speeds exceeding 100 kmph may necessitate bothersome downshifting but remains a necessary trade-off.

The bike's character positions it as an excellent commuter, offering genuine enjoyment on city streets. Beyond the distinctive exhaust note, it reverts to the familiar Honda engine characteristic, which, while not a flaw, defines the trademark 'Honda nature.' Yet, for a retro roadster, there might be a desire for more low-speed performance, a realm where the H’ness falls somewhat short.

Handling & Ride Quality

The Honda H’ness is equipped with a half-duplex frame. Despite its relatively long 1441mm wheelbase, which isn't tailored for aggressive cornering, the bike proves its mettle on the bustling urban roads of India. In this urban context, the H’ness exhibits a nimble demeanour, effortlessly navigating tight spaces, especially during rapid changes in direction. The broad handlebar provides exceptional leverage, with the bike's weight becoming noticeable only at slow speeds or during U-turns. While tackling winding mountain roads, the H’ness delivers stable and neutral handling rather than an exhilarating thrill.

In terms of braking performance, Honda has opted for Nissin calipers, and they excel in slowing down the bike. The lever action, bite, and progression are finely tuned. Notably, the H’ness boasts the most impressive brakes in its segment, surpassing the competition by a significant margin.

Braking

The suspension system is meticulously crafted to handle the diverse road conditions in India, with the rear shock absorbers that guarantee a comfortable ride by effectively dampening jolts when navigating sharp bumps. The telescopic fork generally excels in efficient damping, though it may occasionally bottom out when confronted with particularly sharp bumps. Even when tackling substantial speed breakers, the CB350 maintains a commendable ground clearance of 166 mm, ensuring no scraping issues arise.

Comfort

The Honda H’ness CB350, being a roadster, offers a comfortably neutral riding posture, creating a sense of seamless connection with the rider rather than just perching 'on' the bike. The curved handlebar, directed towards the rider, contributes to the overall enjoyable riding experience. With an accommodating 800mm seat height, it caters to shorter riders without any inconvenience, and its relatively compact width adds to its user-friendly design. However, when compared to larger bikes, the CB350 may lack that distinctive "big bike" sensation.

A noteworthy feature is the premium quality of the switchgear. On the flip side, Honda has positioned the indicator switch at the bottom, with the horn above it, a configuration that can be somewhat confusing and inconvenient.

The seat cushioning is firm, ensuring comfort during shorter rides, like hour-long commutes in the bustling traffic of Mumbai. The flat seat also provides ample space for pillion riders. One minor drawback is the noticeable 181kg kerb weight of the bike, particularly evident when maneuvering it in and out of tight parking spaces.

Features

Despite showcasing a retro-roadster design, the H’ness CB350 seamlessly incorporates various modern features, including several industry-first innovations. It comes equipped with all-LED lighting, a slip-and-assist clutch, a fundamental traction control system, and a semi-digital instrument console that provides an abundance of information such as range, real-time mileage, gear position indicator, trip meter, and odometer. Going above and beyond, the DLX Pro variant offers Bluetooth connectivity, facilitating audio-based turn-by-turn navigation and convenient control over calls and music playback.

Should you buy Honda Hness CB350

Now, let's explore the pricing before we get into the verdict. The Honda H’ness CB350 DLX is priced at Rs 2,09,857, while the DLX Pro variant comes with a price tag of Rs 2,12,856 (all prices ex-showroom, Delhi, as of the current writing). Opting for the Chrome variant incurs an additional cost of Rs 2,000 over the DLX Pro. Clearly, the CB350 carries a premium price compared to its competitors, a typical Honda characteristic. Nevertheless, the Japanese manufacturer has given us an appealing product in the form of the new CB350.

Despite the bike's aesthetic appeal, premium feel, feature-rich nature, and comfortable ride, there's a bit of a let-down with the engine. To elaborate, the H’ness excels in refinement and proves to be an excellent choice for city riding. However, the absence of low-end torque somewhat diminishes the overall thrill of the riding experience. It's akin to savoring a well-prepared dish that lacks the perfect seasoning.
