Scooter in India shows increment in sales

With the known fact, that the motor bikes have dominated the Indian Auto market, even the scooter segment is not lagging behind as it showed an increment of 52 percent to its sales in the current fiscal year. As per the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), the segment accounted a total sale of 11,63,127 units which is 3,98,484 units more than the sales of previous year.



Seventy percent of scooter buyers in India contributes to be women. This automobile is favourite of the young generation and working women of the country as it is the most convenient and easy to handle. With the scooters coming back to the auto market, the company like Honda Scooter India is gaining interest in the segment and are coming up with its new products. The companies in order to increase the buyers interest are producing efficient models with high engine displacement. The scooter produced are able to compete with the moderately powered bikes. With this are also easy to handle and can be ridden by both the male and females.

The segment witnessed a tremendous growth of 104.27 per cent selling 1,88,633 units in the month of October 2010 being a sale of just 92,346 units in the same month last year.

SIAM Director General Vishnu Mathur said, "At one point, people had written off scooters. However, scooters have been repositioned and it has helped. It is doing exceedingly well by targeting a different segment of customers,".

HMSI Operating Head (Sales and Marketing) NK Rattan said, "The latent demand for scooter was always there because of its utility value; it was a question of bringing the right product. When the scooter market was down, it needed a leader to revive the segment". He added, "By catering to different segments and by introducing new products and continuously upgrading them, we have played the role of leader in reviving the scooter market.''
