Unicorn 2005 Expert Review

Since 2005, Honda Unicorn remains on the list one of the leading 150cc players in the country. It comes with superior ride quality with a trustworthy Honda brand name. The bike stands apart from rest of its competitors in terms of refinement, ride quality and aggressive looks. It has enhanced India’s 150cc biking segment with its sheer presence.

Honda CB Unicorn comes with a 149.1cc, four-stroke, air-cooled powerplant. The engine is mated to a five-speed gearbox which regulates its maximum power of 13.14bhp at 8500rpm with a peak torque of 12.84NM at 5500rpm to the wheels. The bike can hit a top speed of 101kmph. Considered as one of most “silent” 150cc bikes of the country, Honda CB Unicorn is a treat for someone who sees Honda as the most reliable brand.

The braking section of CB Unicorn comes with 240mm front disc and 130mm rear drum brake. The tubeless tyres with all-black alloy wheels are of the size 2.75-18” for the front and 3.00-18” for the rear end. The diamond-shaped chassis is paired with telescopic front fork and a spring loaded hydraulic type rear monoshock. Being the first motorcycle in India to employ rear monoshock as a standard equipment, Honda CB Unicorn plays really well on the grounds of comfort. The bike has a fuel tank capacity of 13 liter.

The edgy headlamp section of the Unicorn gets chrome detailing which looks very eye-catching. The instrument console is easy to read, which incorporates three dials that sport tachometer, speedometer and fuel gauge. Honda CB Unicorn features a 3D Honda-wing emblem which adds appeal to its character. The sharply pointed rear tail lamp looks fascinating with clear lens blinkers at the rear fender. Honda CB Unicorn is a value for money product and is competent enough to change the market stats.

Design

Honda CB Unicorn has been bolted on a diamond frame and has been equipped with a sound suspension system that also enhances its style. Its front profile looks eye-catchy with a sharp headlamp design and some chrome element added to it. The fuel tank is crafted in sync with the overall body flow and sports a smart 3D Honda wing emblem. The bike has a longer and well-cushioned seat to provide comfort to the rider and pillion.

The tail lamp section remains unchanged with the same triangular pattern. The body coloured grab rail and clear lens turn indicators further enhances the appeal. Honda CB Unicorn has dimensions of 2,095mm x 756mm x 1,100mm (LxWxH) with a wheelbase of 1,340mm that gives it a handsome and sporty stance. It has a minimum ground clearance of 179mm to ensure better stability. The seat is fitted at a height of 790mm that gives convenience to short heighted riders as well. It comes with a 13 liter fuel tank that enable longer runs without repeated refuelling. The cockpit of Honda CB Unicorn comprises three dials which displays an analogue speedometer, tachometer and fuel gauge along with telltale lights. The total kerb weight of the bike sums up to 146kgs, offering easy-to-ride characteristics.

Engine, Mileage & Performance

Honda CB Unicorn is powered by a air-cooled, four-stroke, SI engine that displaces 149.1cc and comes mated to a five-speed gearbox. It churns out a maximum power of 13.14bhp at 8,500rpm with a peak torque of 12.84Nm at 5,500rpm. The mill has a compression ratio of 9.1:1 and a viscous paper filter. The bike sprints from 0 to 60kmph in just 5 seconds and hits a top speed of 101kmph. Honda CB Unicorn meets Bharat Stage-III emission norms and returns a decent fuel economy of 60kmpl claimed by the manufacturer.

Handling & Ride Quality

The bike runs on 2.75-18 front and 100/90-18 rear tyres that are mounted on stylish black alloy wheels. The braking duties are carried out by 240mm front disc and 130mm rear drum brakes. Being the first bike in India to employ a spring loaded hydraulic mono suspension at the rear, the bike is also equipped with telescopic forks at the front that offer a comfortable ride. A shorter wheelbase and a well-designed handlebar gives good handling characteristics to the bike.

Features

Honda CB Unicorn has a bunch of safety features as well that make it even more desirable. The tyres come with a tuff-up tube that minimises the chance of a puncture. The benefit of tuff-up tube is that the tyre do not get flattened suddenly, hence preventing unplanned stops. The bike has a powerful 12V-35/35W headlamp that lights up the road well in dark conditions. Moreover, the handlebar is integrated with handle weights at both ends that reduces high-speed vibrations and offers a stable & comfortable ride. Honda CB Unicorn comes with a viscous paper filter that cuts down on maintenance costs. A pass-by switch is also provided in the bike to ensure easy and safe overtakes.
