29th September, 2015 : Ducati blesses the Indian automotive market with one of its most prestigious offerings so far - Ducati superbike series. The line-up includes four supersport bikes christened as - 899 Panigale, 1299 Panigale, 1299 Panigale S and Panigale R. With its launch, the supersport bike section of India goes wider and classier. Inspired from the race tracks, the bikes boasts of many impressive features that promise superior performance. The much-awaited Ducati superbikes compete well against other leading players of the industry such as Suzuki Hayabusa and Honda CBR1000RR. The bikes are priced at Rs. 12.20 lac to Rs. 30 lac (ex-showroom, Delhi). A future Ducati 959 Panigale was recently seen in the emission certificates that further confirms its presence and it might be showcased at the upcoming EICMA.

Panigale Expert Review

Ducati superbike range marks a milestone in Indian high-end motorcycling history. The bikes come with fully race track inspired ergonomics that make them stand with leading sports machines of the world. They are fitted with super-refined Ducati engines ranging from 898cc in 899 Panigale, 1198cc in Panigale R and 1285cc in 1299 Panigale and 1299 Panigale S. All motors are mated to six-speed transmission systems. The L-twin cylinder, liquid-cooled engines provide butter-smooth ride quality and performance. The transmission system is paired with a slipper clutch as well that prevents engine braking and loss of revs in case of strict downshifts.

Ducati superbike range are bolted on a monocoque aluminium frame, which provide a rigid and strong skeleton. The suspension system consist of fully adjustable upside-down forks at the front and fully adjustable monoshock at the rear. The bikes are fitted with Pirelli tyres at the front as well as rear with stylish alloy wheels. The braking system includes 330mm dual disc brake with 4-piston calliper at the front and 245mm single disc brake with twin-piston calliper at the rear. The instrumentation goes fully digital with auxiliary adjustment buttons. The lighting system of Ducati superbike range comes with full LED’s at the front as well as rear. The turning blinkers at the front are mounted at the rear view mirrors.

Ducati superbike range are loaded with some hi-tech features. Anti-lock braking system is employed to provide safety and stability. Ducati Traction Control (DTC) is also equipped to the entire range that include eight different levels to prevent rear tyre slipping. The machines also feature three riding modes: Race, Sport and Wet. When the rider selects a particular mode, the system automatically instructs various equipments like ABS, DTC and EBC to act  according to the selected mode. It also includes a particular background light for each mode.

Moreover, the range also come with DDA+ ready feature that integrates the GPS signal to create a "virtual finish line". The system automatically detects, without any intervention by the rider, the conclusion of the lap and stops the chronometric time. This feature is available as standard in Panigale R and as an option in 899 Panigale, 1299 Panigale and 1299 Panigale S. The bikes are also equipped with Ducati Quick shifter, a racing element, which enables quick gear shifting without the involvement of clutch.

Design

The front profile of Ducati Panigale R features twin headlamps with full LED positioning lights. The highly raised aerodynamically designed clear visor further adds to the glory of the bike. The white racing lines run throughout the entire body length of the bike and looks fascinating with red paint scheme. The fuel tank is chiseled to perfection, which looks good and offers a comfortable riding position to the rider. The seating comes well-padded that offers an optimum comfort. The rear end of the bike features stylish twin tail lamps that look majestic in dark.

The bike comes with body dimensions of 2,060mm x 1,130mm (LxH) and has a wheelbase of 1,437mm that ensures superior handling. Furthermore, the seat has been mounted at a height of 830mm and the bike has been assisted with a 17 liter fuel tank. Ducati Panigale R has a total kerb weight of 190.5kgs. The instrumentation of the bike is done intelligently and innovatively that comprises of digital speedometer, tachometer, odometer, clock, fuel gauge, gear position display and an advanced Global Positioning System (GPS).

Engine, Mileage & Performance

Ducati Superbike 899 Panigale is powered by a 898cc, Superquadro L-Twin, 4 Desmodromically actuated valves per cylinder, liquid cooled, four-stroke engine that comes mated to a six-speed transmission system. The mill churns out a net power of 148bhp at 10,750rpm along with a maximum torque of 99Nm at 9,000rpm. The second and third bikes in the lineup are the Ducati Superbike 1299 Panigale and 1299 Panigale S respectively, which gets their power from 1,285cc, Superquadro L-Twin, 4 Desmodromically actuated valves per cylinder, liquid cooled, four stroke that comes linked to a six-speed gearbox and uses wet multiplate clutch assembly. The refined engine generates a peak power of  205hp at 10,500rpm with a net torque of 144.6Nm at 8,750rpm. Lastly, the most powerful machine, Ducati Panigale R is propelled by a 1,198cc, Superquadro L-Twin, 4 Desmodromically actuated valves per cylinder, liquid cooled engine that comes paired to a six-speed  transmission setup. The engine develops a net power of  205hp at 11,500rpm with a maximum torque of 136.2Nm at 10,250rpm.

All four bikes have been blessed with an electronic fuel injection system that ensures a superior throttle response with an uninterrupted flow of power. Furthermore, the Ducati Quick Shifter (DQS) helps in easy and quick gear shifting without the involvement of clutch giving a more refined racing experience.

Handling & Ride Quality

Ducati Panigale R moves on 120/70 ZR17 front and 200/55 ZR17 rear tyres that comes mounted over stylish black alloy wheels. The super grippy Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa SP tyres come with a commendable adhesion property and hence, offers an uncompromised stability on the road. The fierce stopping potential is delivered by 330mm dual disc brakes with Brembo four piston callipers at the front and a single 245mm disc brake with twin piston calliper at the rear. The braking gets even more precise and responsive with the incorporation of a high-performance Anti Lock Braking System (ABS) added to the package. Ducati Panigale R avails a comfortable and stress free ride as it comes equipped with Öhlins NIX30 43mm fully adjustable upside down forks upfront and Fully adjustable Ohlins TTX36 unit monoshock at the rear.
