Mahindra & Mahindra has always been an aggressive player in every segment that it has set foot in, and that is the reason why Mahindra has always been a prominent name in the Indian automobile industry. Mahindra 2 Wheelers, which oversees the two wheeler market came into the segment with the same aggressive stance by taking over Kinetic Motors and setting on its maiden journey by launching three scooters in 2009 - the Duro, the Rodeo and the Flyte. The Indian scooter segment has been seeing a very tough competition lately. The never ending demands of Indian consumers for scooters has prompted established players like Honda, Hero MotoCorp, TVS, and Suzuki to refresh their existing models from time to time. On top of that, a lot of new scooters are also being launched in the market every now and then for quenching the rising demand, taking the competition levels to all new heights.
Following the trend, Mahindra 2 Wheelers also updated its Rodeo variant at the same time when Hero MotoCorp launched its Maestro. Christened as Mahindra Rodeo RZ, this updated version of Rodeo has been specially designed with the aim of taking down the current reign of Honda Motors and Hero MotoCorp over the Indian scooter market. The initial variant of Rodeo had the Taiwanese company, SYM, to thank for most of its technical specifications; the updated version, known as the Rodeo RZ, too has been loaded with the same engine that features a displacement capacity of 125cc. However, besides that engine, the company has equipped this advanced model with numerous new features as well which can give an edge to the Rodeo RZ over its arch rivals such as Honda Activa, Hero MotoCorp Pleasure, Suzuki Access and TVS Scooty Pep+. The company has redesigned its exteriors and fitted a Dual Curve Digital Ignition System also. Thanks to this new system, the overall engine performance of Rodeo RZ has improved and an increase in its fuel efficiency has also been observed. In addition to all this, Mahindra Rodeo RZ also offers better ground clearance and much more space in terms of storage compartment as compared to its predecessor.
Mahindra Rodeo RZ designing aspects do not carry a lot of changes except the new stickers at the front and rear ends and the more edgy characteristics. For riders with a good body build, this scooter might be a bit small as it is a little smaller than its rivals but with overall dimensional attributes of 1790 x 650 x 1110 mm (l x w x h), the Rodeo is really longer, wider and taller than what it used to be and offers a lot more space to the driver and the pillion rider than before. The designing of this scooterette has been done keeping in mind its aim to challenge the dominance of Japanese scooters like Honda Activa and Suzuki Access in the market. And although Rodeo RZ is not a completely new avatar of the previous variant, it does flaunt a lot of new cool design aspects for capturing the attention of the ever-growing number of young riders. The Rodeo RZ has been blessed with a lightweight structure which makes for a swift and fun-filled ride. The front fascia looks charming thanks to the inclusion of a trapezoidal headlight and body-coloured rear view mirrors. The scooter looks quite sleek and slim at the front and has got a chrome tip on its apron. The clear lens turn indicators have been mounted on the apron and give a decent look to the Rodeo RZ. Mahindra designers have worked some major changes in the scooter's glove box. The latest Rodeo features an increased level of convenience as the fuel filler cap has been repositioned in the front from its conventional location under the seat. Thus, the scooter not only provides huge amounts of space but also makes the fuel-refill process a lot more convenient for its riders.
Mahindra Rodeo Appearance
The Rodeo RZ scores well in terms of appearance all thanks to its sleek and sober attire. The scooter has been blessed with certain changes like a new sticker job at the front and the rear ends besides others. Body-coloured body panels impart a decent look to the scooter. The information cluster of the Rodeo RZ is also very attractive and happens to be the first digital instrument console to be offered in the Indian scooter segment. Named as the 'Digital Dashboard' by its makers, this instrument cluster features a full-fledged set of information units including a speedometer, a tachometer, an odometer, a trip meter, an acceleration timer, an over speed alarm, a fuel gauge and even a watch. On top of all this, this Digital Dashboard comes with a unique colour changing ability that creates a scintillating visual effect at night. Besides all these features, this Mahindra ride also carries a USB-cum-mobile charger on board for attracting the ultra-sophisticated youngsters who would love this special feature. What adds an extra dash of sophistication to the entire Rodeo RZ package is the fantastic combo of handle lock, fuel tank lock, engine start/stop option and magnetic shutter that the scooter offers.
Engine And Performance
Mahindra Rodeo RZ is powered by a new age 124.6cc, 4-stroke, spark ignition engine, which has given the scooter an edge over its competitors as it offers a whopping power output of 8.1bhp at 7000rpm along with a stunning 9Nm of peak torque at 5500rpm. Talking about the performance of this scooter, it does not take the Rodeo RZ more than 9.35 seconds to sprint from 0-60kmph. This remarkable acceleration has been possible due to a linear delivery of power at all levels of speed. The Rodeo RZ offers great amount of power and torque at low speeds as well which can take you swiftly through any kind of city traffic. The more power and torque at low speeds has given a very smooth throttle response to the Rodeo RZ and it is far better than arch rival, Suzuki Access. The engine is mated with a smooth and quick-responding automatic CVT gearbox, which is one of the best transmission systems ever to be seen in any scooter available in the country till date. Due to the presence of the CVT system, the rubber-band effect in this Mahindra ride is minimal at lower rpm values, which, when combined with the scooter's low kerb weight of just 106 kg, helps the scooter feel exceptionally light and smooth at 60/65kmph. Plus, the Z series 125cc engine propels the scooter very smoothly and neatly. The company even claims that this scooter has a much better acceleration and pick up than one of the segment-leaders, Suzuki Swish.
Mahindra Rodeo Mileage
As per the company claims, thanks to the inclusion of a new ignition system and carburettor the engine of Mahindra Rodeo RZ can deliver a fabulous ARAI-certified fuel-economy of 59.38kmpl.
Braking And Handling
Mahindra has equipped the Rodeo RZ with a decent set of brakes at both the front as well as the rear end. Its braking mechanism consists of 130mm drum brakes employed for both the front and rear wheels. However, there is a wide scope of improvement in the braking mechanism as it lacks in brake lock clamp. But, the riders need not worry too much as the 130mm drum brakes also work quite effectively even over wet and muddy tracks. Mahindra has deployed the standard MRF tyres on both the front and rear ends, which are quite grippy on slippery surfaces. Thus, the handling performance of the scooter is enhanced and its stability is improved. The increased ground clearance of 154mm helps the scooter go over the potholes smoothly and there are less jerks and jolts, resulting in a pleasant ride experience. What enhances the ride quality even more is the suspension mechanism, featuring telescopic forks for the front and monoshock absorbers for the rear wheel. The telescopic suspension at the front end offers superb cornering, while the rear shock absorbers prove their worth during hard and fast riding experience on curvy roads.
Mahindra Rodeo RZ features a fine set of safety features including the unique side stand down warning system besides several others. The 4-in-1 anti-theft key, for instance, allows the driver to central-lock the entire vehicle with a single move and subsequently secures all the keyholes with solid shutters for fool-proof security of the vehicle. Plus, the 7AH lead-acid battery seamlessly powers the 35W headlamp so that perfect illumination is provided to the driver at night. What's more, the grab rail attached to the rear seat has been smartly designed so as to provide additional support and safety to the pillion rider while complementing the attire of the scooter perfectly.
Sober appearance, ample storage space, convenient fuel filler at the front, superb acceleration and pick-up and a wide array of sophisticated features.
Low fuel efficiency, average braking mechanism and a slightly bigger price tag in comparison with rival scooters.
