After successfully launching three automatics in the Indian scooter market - Mahindra Flyte, Mahindra Rodeo and Mahindra Duro, Mahindra 2 Wheelers responded to the overwhelming customer enthusiasm for its rides by introducing yet another automatic scooter in the country, christening it as Mahindra Kine. Stepping aside from the popular industry trend of gathering as much hype as possible for an upcoming model and then launching it amidst a lot of hue and cry, the Mahindra camp decided to send this particular offering of theirs directly to the showrooms and its details to their official website, without creating any commotion at all about its launch in the media, which came as a big surprise both for the buyers as well as the rival camps of Mahindra. Belonging to the charismatic bloodline of the Flyte-Rodeo-Duro trio, Mahindra Kine, just like its ancestral models, also sports a compact and captivating outfit that hides beneath itself a fantastic assortment of high-tech features and fitment that work together to make every ride on the Kine memorable for its riders.
Mahindra Kine features an overall dimensional characteristics of 1765 x 635 x 1060 mm (l x w x h), offering a decent ground clearance of 120 mm and a sufficiently long wheelbase of 1225 mm while keeping the saddle height at a reasonable 760 mm. Blessed with such a smartly-proportioned structure that weighs not more than 82 kg, the Kine not only makes for a comfortable and easily manoeuvrable ride but also emerges as a remarkable unisex scooter. When considered from the comfort point of view, this scooter can be found presenting its riders with a long, wide and well-contoured seat that supplies ample comfort and room for two riders while helping them to assume an upright sitting position so that every ride, no matter however long or short it might be, is immensely comfortable and pleasant for the riders of Kine. For the driver's advantage in particular, the foot-board area of the scooter has been so designed that it offers sufficiently large leg-room even for taller drivers.
For storage purposes, a sleek storage box right below the handlebars and a sufficiently spacious under-seat storage compartment, large enough to accommodate a helmet and other small possessions, have been provided in Mahindra Kine. Next to the front-end storage box, an on-board mobile charging socket has been positioned for added utility. The analogue instrument console for the scooter has been designed to include a fuel gauge, a tachometer, a trip-meter, a speedometer, a low-fuel indicator, a side stand alarm and several other warning lights, forming a full-fledged information panel for the driver. Plus, the inclusion of a maintenance-free battery helps in cutting down on the efforts required on the owner's part for maintaining the Kine in a good working condition.
Mahindra Kine Appearance
When we take a look at the attire of Mahindra Kine, attractive next-gen features like three-spoke alloy wheels and youthful body-graphics spanning the entire side profile of the scooter meet the eye. The front fascia in particular puts up a pretty good show of critical design elements jacketed in alluring outfits, helping the scooter have a terrific road presence at all times while proving worthwhile in all kinds of driving conditions too. Be it the multi-focal headlamp responsible for ensuring that the driver gets great visibility at night, or the pair of sharply-cut sleek and stylish turn blinkers mounted on the front apron, or the streamlined body design that enhances the comfort factor of the ride, or the tail-lamp cluster positioned right below the rear grab rail, or the rear-mounted grab rail provided for additional pillion safety – every little feature of the Kine, besides serving its primary intended purpose, adds to the beauty of the scooter.
Engine And Performance
The new avatar of Mahindra Kine has been loaded with a 2-stroke, single-cylinder, air-cooled engine that holds a displacement capacity of 71.5cc. This compact power-plant pumps out a maximum of 2.8bhp at 5500rpm and generates 5Nm of top torque at 4500rpm. Being a low capacity engine capable of generating not more than an average level of power and torque ratings, the power-mill of Kine cannot really be expected to surprise riders with its acceleration and pick-up. Still, thanks to a set of compact tyres and a lightweight body-frame, Mahindra Kine successfully manages to offer a decent acceleration along with a reasonably good top speed of 60kmph. To assist the 72cc engine of Kine in its operation, Mahindra 2 Wheelers have loaded the scooter with an efficient automatic gearbox, a self/kick start mechanism and a 5 Ah Lead-acid battery.
Mahindra Kine Mileage
While its manufacturers claim that the Kine is capable of delivering a fabulous fuel-economy of 63.25kmpl, test runs and user reviews place its actual fuel-economy somewhere around 55kmpl, which is not bad either. Carrying a 4-litre petrol tank on board, the Kine can take its riders on a 220km long trip on a full tank before demanding a refill.
Braking And Handling
Braking system is one of the most critical parts of a vehicle and its effectiveness goes a long way into determining the safety levels of the ride. For the Kine, the engineers at the Mahindra 2 Wheelers camp have selected a pair of Mechanical, Expanding shoe type, Drum brakes measuring 112.2 mm in diameter to serve both at the front as well as the rear wheel. Although Disc brakes are known to provide a much stronger braking action, Kine being an extremely lightweight and easy-to-handle scooter does quite well even with these Drum brakes.
As far as the handling and control of Mahindra Kine is concerned, the lightweight body-frame of the scooter again proves very useful in make it exceedingly easy to handle and control. Especially for city riding, where one often needs to take sharp turns and weave our way through busy traffic conditions, the swift and peppy nature of the Kine comes as nothing short of a boon for the rider. Plus, the seat height that has been kept reasonably low allows even shorter riders to have a great grip on the vehicle. Besides all this, the suspension system too plays a very significant role in ride comfort and handling, and for Mahindra Kine, an effective combo of bottom link suspension for the front end and swing arm shock absorbers for the rear end have been employed by the company.
From safety point of view, there is a notably wide assortment of features and fitment that Kine comes equipped with. Starting with the braking system, although not as effective as the currently popular Disc brakes, the 112.2mm Drum brakes employed for this scooter also prove quite efficient. Plus, the multi-focal 35W headlamp that supplies ample illumination for the driver even on the darkest of tracks and the rear-mounted grab rail intelligently designed to provide extra safety to the pillion further add value to the safety arsenal of Mahindra Kine.
Attractive looks, easy handling, comfortable seating and lightweight structure.
Low power ratings, great scope of improvement in braking system and lack of tubeless tyres.
